Here comes the explanation, the QB wants to renegotiate his pay before this play can be run...looks like LSU was ready they have people in nice suits going on to the field, it appears one of them has one of those big checks the type you see at golf tournaments".

Now imagine an Alabama rep running out there with an offer to sit out ......

Absolutely, now we have to rush a conference table out on to the field. Add a banker and a Notary, all set.

Having an 0/1 success rate and being cut from the team the next year might be a reason for others not to do it though

It’s already been reported that Nico wasn’t the only player to threaten to sit out of a playoff game.

The fans that I have talked to, young/old, black/white, etc. are siding with the Vols. They (we the fans) were OK with NIL but did not like the pay to play, but we went with it. But Nico crossed the line. If a kid agrees to a deal going forward & gets hurt or beat out, we can live with it. If the kid wants to hold out for a new deal, I hope going forward that all coaches, AD's, teams, etc. do a Josh & let him go in a very public way. I also hope we all agree that the LSU powers to be draw the line - we do not deal with kids who pull a Nico.

It depends on the player

Nuss wouldn't do that.

Arik Gilbert absolutely would

This is where NIL gets weird. This started from jersey sales, autographs, video games, etc. We can't call this NIL anymore. If we're negotiating sums to play, then contracts need to be involved

Well said. Agree this isn’t making sense. it’s not Nico saying I’m not going to do this television commercial for so-and-so unless I get more money. It’s Nico saying I’m not going to play unless more money. Irony is that playing well boosts marketability likewise sitting out makes one worth less

Easy! Revenue sharing, like the pro leagues do, and a governing body that has a say so on ALL NIL deals. If the NCAA shares its revenue then they get to make rules. All pay for play NIL deals are dead in the water. That gives the NCAA control again and makes things SOMEWHAT even. As far as legitimate NIL deals, some schools will have an advantage, like we’ve enjoyed the last 25 years with our in-state recruiting advantage.

Still doesn't stop NIL.

The court ruling that opened this Pandora's Box won't let that happen. Just like the NFL can't stop a player from having a deal with Old Spice etc.

Current NIL deals can't be pay for play. We all know they are but the way they are structured they aren't. Wink, wink.

An NCAA in control again would need legislation that could withstand a court challenge and if you've been paying attention, you know there is practically no chance of that happening.

That's the rub. Who gets to choose what is legitimate? Any fix would require new legislation, and it would have to survive a court challenge. It takes just one successful challenge and there will be plenty.

Believe me, I wish the Genie could be put back in the bottle, but it can't. revenue sharing will be implemented and for some athletes that will be enough, but NIL will always be around with supporters trying to throw "a little extra" at the big recruits and better players in order to ensure a winning season. The best you can hope for is to end the constant transfers to slow things down a little, and if they try to limit them too much you can be certain there will be a court challenge.

What if it's the starting backfield. Or what if both teams hold out?

I think you know the answer to this. Eventually these kids (probably family influence) will completely destroy collegiate sports, and it is almost there now, in terms of the passion I once had compared to now. They had a great thing, but, like everything else they touch, it will go to complete shite.

In today’s world, any player that becomes of note for a team is susceptible to this type of conduct in leveraging a team. Just depends on who is around advising them.

It is a mercenary league. Without contracts and collective bargaining, which are the most fundamental elements of labor agreements, college football will begin to hemorrhage fans.

Head coach has to make it known before the season no one is getting a raise or renogotiating during the season no exceptions. Options are play or leave.

Same Philosophy as not negotiating with terrorists.

Probably so. We knew this was coming. College athletics is being destroyed, particularly football. It’s a mercenary minor league with no school loyalty. Sad.

It’s the stupidest problem because we have had a solution for millennia. The solution is called a “contract.” It’s this wonderful, legally enforceable thing, where two or more parties agree to an exchange after negotiating the terms of that exchange. Contracts protect all of the parties.

The lack of contracts is one of the main reasons why these NIL collectives are a fraud. Fans give money with no benefit. Players get money with no obligation to play (what the fans actually want). Administrators take a fee and fight to keep the unfavorable system in place.
