I was just searching my memory banks for a similarly bad call
It wasn't a bad call though. Definitely a strike.
It just looks bad because of the camera angle and where Hernandez was set up.

That inning could have been over way sooner and saved Evans about 10-12 pitches.
Yep. Remember thinking, this shitty ump is causing Evans to burn his pitch count

Looks a strike to me.
Looks like it’s right on the edge of the zone. The camera angle makes it look like a ball, but move that camera toward the line from the plate to the pitcher and you’d see that ball moving toward the plate.

I think Hernandez sets up too far outside as a general rule.
His having to reach so far for that ball is the opposite of framing and we were lucky the ump didn't lose perspective of where the plate is.
Either way it was very close and was a very critical call.
Home plate ump was tight but as consistent as we have seen in this regional. Maybe 2 outright missed calls come to mind last night and neither ended up critical.

Our TV angle and catcher position is tough there. It was in fact a strike (or extremely close). Same angle is why so many looked like strikes but were just outside.
That angled shot of the plate at Tiger Stadium has been misleading a lot on balls and strikes. I wish they would reposition that camera.

Could have been called either way.....

He was the rare ump that seemed to ignore the catcher's setup and reaction. I believe it was the first AB of the game when Cowan missed on location and Hernandez had to move over a good bit and failed to catch the ball and the ump called it a strike as it caught the inside corner. Very rare to see the catcher drop the ball on a close pitch and still get the strike call.

I work at a bank and y’all know baseball better but I gotta say MANY calls for each team were beyond head-scratchers to me. It was not just squeezing the zone here and there and then expanding it 3 pitches later - I was thinking when they review this game on tape, they might reassign that guy to field-only, not behind the plate. Quite a number of times the catchers held the ball still in their gloves for a full two seconds as if to say “you can’t be serious…”

LR got plenty of calls last night as well
Including some on Sunday with Shores that set him over the edge

Umpire had to think about that one.

It was the same umpire from game 1.
He was my favorite umpire all season in game 1. He seemed to be a bit all over the place Monday.

well, he threw from the right side of the rubber, so it may have grazed the strike zone...it was close and I know the LR pitchers were getting squeezed by the ump, so I am sure LR is butt hurt about that.
Anyhow, electronic strike zone can't get here soon enough...

He was consistent. That was a strike on our batters also. It is either the angle of the camera or just his zone, but what appeared to be just off the plate on the left side was a strike and what seemed to be on the outside edge of the plate on the right side was a ball.

Let's not pretend the umps were being unfair with this. They were inconsistent on both sides the night before and this game. They're a direct result of why our pitchers mentally collapsed with walks because many pitches between were strikes and they were not giving them the 50/50s on those. Anything questionable - especially the night before - they were squeezing. The strike zone kept rising and shrinking depending on what pitcher was in the game. The umps were awful in my opinion.

That pitch was on the black, it was also moving across the plate. Tough angle and catcher’s reach make it look like that. These umps were much better than the garbage SEC crews, I’ll give them that.
Wish they had MLB level pitch tracking at SEC parks like they have in the major leagues but the SEC doesn’t want to show up their shitty umps and hold them accountable like MLB does.

Hernandez was setup way outside so it made it look worse because he had to reach inside for it.
Look at where Hernandez’s right knee is on the ground right behind the plate.
