That was a sort of obvious "high risk, low reward" play. If you get the first down, you have to call your last timeout and either kick a field goal or take 1 shot to the endzone. There was a low percentage you would score the touchdown on the play called to get the first down.
The analytics (like Saban talking about the chart he carried in his pocket that told him when to go for 2) don't always account for, "Hey, this is different" situations.

It was the time and lack of timeouts that make it retarded.
Especially once he burned the timeout and had none left before the play.
Even if he converts, gets back to the line and spikes it. You have time for maybe one play in the end zone.
That was an atrocious call even at the JV level. Borderline retarded.

I would be more concerned if he didn’t admit the mistake. It didn’t cost us and he learned for next time. It’s ok.

Nah,
You had time to run two plays if Hilton gets the first. Clock stops on 1st down which means you are spiking the snap at about 9-11 second left. Then you get one shot at the endzone followed by the FG attempt.
You kick the FG there because, as we saw, the 1st isn’t a given where the three points is close to 100%.

I think a lot coaches use analytics as a crutch or an excuse not to make a tough decision. If it doesn’t work the coach just says, “well analytics said we should do that”
I think they should part of the decision process but analytics don’t take into account the flow of the game.
In a game like Saturday, on the road, facing a top 5 opponent and no. What was shaping up to be a low scoring defensive battle, you have to take the easy points even if analytics say go for it.

They convert, nothing to talk about
If they convert and get a first down there still wasn’t much time to do anything. Maybe 1 pass to the endzone then kick.
Given the situation and time, kicking was the correct call no matter how it may or may not have worked out.

Yeah, that was obviously stupid. For the life of me, I can’t understand why a coach needs an analytics sheet to tell him things like this. When I was 10 years old I would have made the correct decision there to take the points.
There were two levels of time opportunities that argued against going for it. The first was that when you go for it deep in the opponents territory, and fail, you get a field position advantage out of it. But this is only so if you have enough time on the clock to hold them, get. the ball back and drive for a score. That would be about three minutes since we had only one time out.
The second time opportunity we were missing is that even if we made the first down we would not have had enough time to really exploit the opportunity, and we probably would have settled for a field goal anyway.
Just a damn stupid, Les Miles level decision that was disappointing. In Kelly’s defense, we haven’t seen much of that kind of stupidity. We’ve seen him go for it and fail, but those were reasonable gambles that just didn’t work.

Kelly said yesterday that the analytics sheet told him to go for it, but in hindsight it was the wrong call due to not having much time even if you convert.
At midfield, in the middle of the game with plenty of time left? Sure.
It’s stupid to claim analytics had anything to do with that. True analytics is not telling you to go there in any way shape or form without a timeout.
He caved to players being emotional and arrogant instead of using their heads (especially Nuss). Even if they get the first, they may get one play at the end zone at best with a risk to lose any shot at points. They ended up losing that shot anyhow.
Also, you are limited in play options if you get that first down.
All around hits a stupid decision by a coach notorious for stupid decisions.
Luckily, the team was able to overcome that stupidity.
I like Kelly, but that doesn’t mean he is not a stupid game day coach living off the one time (Bama 2022) that this type of decision worked.

Did he, though?
Because this isn’t the first, second or third time he’s made that decision and I don’t think it has worked out yet.

Is anyone else a bit concerned that our 10 million dollar coach didn’t understand that in the moment?
Nuss was on fire to go for it. I get it. He had just missed the read on the previous play, which is what really cost us that TD. It happens.
I also get trusting your senior QB up to a point. I think Kelly got swayed not only by the analytics, but the players. But he’s the head coach. In the future, he needs to make the right call and not be influenced by them when the FG really is the right call.

It's who he is. At his age, he isn't going to change.
It’s easy to think this since Kelly has gone for it and not made it multiple times.
However, he’s also reversed course on Raymond, helped to build a top-notch NIL operation, went back to the portal after saying he wanted to focus on HS and bought the most expensive class this year after saying we weren’t in the biz buying players.
I want to see some FG’s taken as proof he will be as flexible on the field as off, but the man has proven to be capable of changing since coming to LSU.

A field goal in that game was the correct call. He has a problem with that sometimes.

Monday morning coaches are the best….
Woodward should fire Kelly and hire you guys…
If he would’ve scored instead of fumbling, y'all would’ve thought Kelly was a genius.
They won in a tough environment to a top five team, enjoy the moment and move on….

I don't mind him going for it. What i do mind is throwing a backwards pass in that situation. That was just shitty playcalling. Slants, outs, roll out to the right, do something other than throw it behind you when you need 2 yards in front of you at the goal line.
Posted on 9/3/25 at 7:45 am to Salamander_Wilson
For me it was two-fold. 1. The decision to actually go for it was dumb because we really didn't have enough time to run another play. 2. The actual play call. If you want to go for it, fine, actually call a play that puts the ball either in the end-zone or to a guy running across the middle who can score. Don't call a WR screen! That was the portion of this whole thing that really was frustrating to me. Also agreed that sometimes you have to just make the obvious call and not rely on analytics. We were in Junior High School level field goal range, kick the field goal and gain some momentum going into the lockeroom. This is one of the things that really frustrates me about Kelly is that he makes these statements after the game regarding situations that 99% of viewers could see! If we are going to be playing games into January, he HAS to be better in these type of situations with just doing the right thing. Even if analytics may not always agree.

Yes.
It was the wrong call.

I’m confident he knows a hell of lot more about football than you do.

He throws the fade to Green and we score 7. That is almost unstoppable.
Posted on 9/3/25 at 7:55 am to Salamander_Wilson
That call was probably the angriest i've been with BK since his tenure here. So much so i almost turned the game off. I'm hoping that now he sees we have a defense this year and he'll start taking points in the redzone now that we know we dont have to score 100 to win.
I understand the thought process. They took a timeout and most likely called 2 plays, the first one being the screen which if they converted theyd have to stop the clock to move the chains. Then the 2nd one which theyd throw to the endzone for one last shot. But i dont care about any of that, i just want the 3 and to keep momentum going into half.

It amazes me how these meathead rant posters do not have an understanding of basic knowledge.
I can't count the number of times I made mistakes as a coach. If it's life and death for you as a fan, then you probably need to find something to do to relieve your stress.
