A good basketball coach shouldn't be to much to ask, since LSU mens basketball is the only other profitable sport at LSU. Like Kingshakabooboo stated, fans want a winner, to be in the dance most years. Its not National Championship or bust like baseball or football.

Fans shouldn't EXPECT national championships....and no reasonable fan does. However, that doesn't mean the program/school should lower its GOALS to be a perennial championship contender and accept mediocrity (which at this point would be a massive step up!)

Are they really planning to move basketball games off campus? The product on court needs to improve.

If McMahon is canned, which seems likely, LSU needs to hire a strong basketball coach. Please, LSU, don't hire a retread! Rehiring Wade is like recapping your tennis shoes. Get someone who can coach and recruit, and not some guy whose main skill is big talk.

So firing McMahon would be premature by this standard, right?

“not some guy whose main skill is having the highest win% in program history and makes the tourney every year”

The net change was -22 over 5 years in a much different time, in terms of recruiting and how quickly you could change the trajectory for your program.

Under Coach MM, the net change was -27 in 4 years, in a time when recruiting practices should allow you to right the ship fairly quickly.

So, no.

Told you eventually they’d start to attack Dale Brown when the Wade nonsense became untenable.

I was an LSU student when Dale arrived. I was in his first coaching class. The first day his topic was how winning the opening jump translated to winning in life. That was the only time basketball strategy, etc was discussed the rest of the semester. It was all the Dale Brown motivational speeches and platitudes we all came to love. He alsohad guest speakers like Eddie Palubinskas fresh from the 1972 Olympics and the genreal manager of the New York Knicks.

While its true recruiting processes were different then, all coaches operated under the existing rules, No matter how your roster is assembled, major injuries to key players are devestating to a team and recruiting under an NCAA investigation is difficult and is used against a team by other schools recruiting the player.

LSU basketball was basically terrible from the mid 1950's, after Bob Pettit left until 1977-78 under Dale Brown, except for the three years of Pete Maravich.

720-693 So, we've been sorry!! We got fans acting like LSU was a basketball school.

As someone pointed out a couple of weeks ago, LSU is in the top 20 of all time in Final Four Appearances among all schools. That does not make us a basketball school, but it surprised me for sure. We weren’t as bad as I thought we were.

Even then, except for his senior season, it was only mediocre at best outside of Maravich's play.

The SEC began in the 1932-33 season. 93 years ago. Looking at the history, in SEC Play, LSU was first or second when there were no divisions, or first in the division when there were divisions, 21 times.

Harry Rabenhorst had 6, 4 1st and 2 2nds
Dale Morey had 1, a 2nd
Press Maravich had 1, a 2nd
Dale Brown had 7, 3 1st and 4 2nds
John Brady had 3, all 1sts in the west.
Trent Johnson had 1, a 1st in the west
Will Wade had 2, a 1st and a 2nd

I get so tired of making this argument but here we go again. No intelligent LSU fan thinks we are a basketball schools we are all fully aware that we are a football and baseball schools. Most intelligent LSU fans realize we are never going to consistently be thought of as a potential Nat Championship team or maybe not ever even win one Natty. However we expect the have a competitive team that is fun to watch, wins more than they lose, makes the Tournament most years and occasionally makes a run to a Sweet 16 or better. Thats it. Give us that and most honest and intelligent LSU are good. Want to take one guess who had us there?
