I’ve watched a decent amount of this whole tournament, regional, super regionals and CWS and I can’t recall a single pitched ball going to the backstop.

There was one by Georgia last night in the late innings.

3. I’m sure it’s been great for OU and UNC fans, but this CWS has sucked

Oklahoma has had some elite freshman pitching step up, and these guys weren't some top recruits by any shape of the imagination

Cord Rager finished the regular season with an ERA close to 6 and an SEC ERA north of 7

He has given up 3 ER in 3 starts going 19 innings in the NCAAT. He was just outside the Top 400 on PG rankings

Nick Wesloski had a decent regular season as a reliever, made 2 starts in the NCAAT and given up 4 ER in 2 starts going 12.2 IP. He was barely inside the Top 1000 at perfect game. He was the #140 overall player in TEXAS by PG.

Doesnt hurt when you get performances like that out of freshmen

What many don't realize is that this type of stuff needs to happen for just about every championship team. In 2023 Thatcher Hurd had a 13.81 ERA in conference play. Then we got to Omaha and he only gave up 3 earned runs over 12 innings.

Roughly 125–135 total games are played in the NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament each year, depending on how many “if necessary” games are needed in the double-elimination and best-of-three rounds.

Here’s the breakdown:

Round Teams Format Approx. Games
Regionals 64 teams at 16 sites 4-team double elimination 96–112
Super Regionals 16 teams at 8 sites Best-of-3 series 16–24
Men’s College World Series 8 teams Two 4-team double-elimination brackets + best-of-3 finals 13–17
Total 125–153 max possible

A more realistic estimate:

* Regionals: Average about 6.5–7 games per regional ? ~104–112 games total.
* Super Regionals: Most series end in 2 games, some go 3 ? ~19–21 games.
* College World Series: Usually 14–16 games.

That puts a typical tournament around 135 games, give or take a few.

For comparison:

* NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament: 67 games.
* NCAA Baseball Tournament: ~135 games.
* MLB regular season: 2,430 games.

So the NCAA baseball tournament is roughly twice as many games as March Madness, even though it starts with the same 64-team field. The reason is the double-elimination regionals and College World Series format.

As an LSU fan, if LSU were to win it all through the longest possible path:

* Regional: up to 5 games
* Super Regional: 3 games
* CWS bracket: up to 5 games
* Championship series: 3 games

That’s 16 postseason games for one team.

The missus and I were there for those two games. I told her we could go to the first game we would lose then we could go sightseeing around Omaha the next day before coming home. Imagine our surprise. So we stayed the next day and won again. My wife decided we should stay for the Fla games but we were leaving for Maine on Wednesday already and just didn’t have time. She says it’s my fault we didn’t win 2017 lol.

I took my daughter who had just graduated from college to the CWS in 2017 and we also had to leave before the finals against Florida. Maybe it is our fault LSU lost to Florida and not yours. That week in Omaha with my daughter is a fond memory and LSU beating OSU was awesome to watch.

Against an AMAZING WF team...54-10 before we beat them twice...on a 7 game win streak after sweeping regional and super regional and 2 wins in Omaha including once against us. LSU had pitchers step up those games to get us through. It is hard to lose in your first or second game and have to come out of the losers bracket.
