1983 First Day Of Practice! Jerry Stovall, “We Don’t Have Anyone That Can Block Him!”

Opening Fall practice, Coach is talking to reporters. They are going down the roster, when it gets to the DL, as they started asking about the LB’ers, Stovall said, Y’all didn’t ask about Henry Thomas!” A reporter reply’s, what about Thomas. Then Stovall gave the reply, I don’t have anyone that can block him!
Henry was an athlete, out of Eisenhower High School (Houston). Around 6’2” 250#’s. He played a number of positions, TE was one. He was working with Pete Jenkins.

It was a good news bad news scenario. Thomas was a beast and our OL wasn’t the best at the time.

Les Miles said the same thing about Michael Brockers but it was after the season. I think it was in a draft interview maybe.

I remember big Henry Thomas. He was one of the greats. My days as a student coincided with the Jerry Stovall years.
Basketball was the most exciting sport back then.

my years at LSU were the Stovall years. Man,there were high , really high hopes for that 1983 team. Made every game except Ole Miss and Tulane.

The offense was very good. The D had to replace like 9 starters from '82. Not good.

They were fat. Lance Smith was a fat arse at over 300 lbs.

I remember Thomas pacing along the line of scrimmage yelling at the offense coming out of the huddle whenever the other team got in the red zone. One of my all-time favorites!

Same here. McClendon was the coach my freshman year and Arnsparger was the coach my senior year. Stovall was everything in between. Losing to Tulane two years in a row was awful.

I played 3 on 3 pickup basketball against Henry Thomas his freshman year. We checked each other. He was a sloppy fat guy about 6’ 1” (an inch shorter than me). As nice a guy as I ever played against.
His physical appearance was nothing like his extraordinary athleticism!

Years back Les went to a high school to visit a kid. The head football coach walked him over to the gym. A pickup game was going on, one of the players rebounded the ball, took it the length of the court, jammed the ball. The coach said, that’s him.
Les went on to sign him.
October 17, 2014, his high school number 60 was retired and he was there to accept it.

Well, I was going to say it, but that no good Buddy said it. The guy that Deuce Geralds reminds me of is this guy Henry Thomas. The reason I started this thread. I watched film on Deuce, he played RB, moved him around on the field. Watching him on the field.
I remember watching Former Tiger Danielle Hunter, back when he was in high school. Hunter never left the field, offense, defense and special teams. A good friend of mine was the OC at Morton Ranch, where Hunter played high school ball. When my friend got the job, he told me to come up to the school. Took me into the weight room. There was a picture of Hunter, in his Tiger uniform. He still had records on the boards in the weight room.

Probably he and Michael Brockers were top 3 of best defensive lineman we have had in the last 12-15 years years. We just haven't been able to get them. Hopefully under kiffin we start a run of good to great defensive tackles again.
