The rule is fine, it’s illegal to hit a player when he starts to slide so you have to give the defense something.

He's a dumb player. It's not a dumb rule. Defense can't touch you once you start the slide, that's why you're down as soon as you drop

I don’t get it. If the runner is supposed to be down where he begins the slide then why isn’t any contact after that considered a late hit?
