It isnt. Its basically like taking a knee to avoid contact, except your momentum is gaining yards even after you've given up. If the defense cant pound you, you cant be allowed to gain yards after that.

It’s a dumb rule. You’re down when you hit the ground in college. Changing that because a QB is the one running is retarded, if a RB took a direct snap or was placed at QB the rule wouldn’t apply. It’s stupid

If the defender cant crush the sliding QB to stop their forward progress then the QB cant be given thise extra yards. It's really not that difficult to understand.

Under NCAA rules, a runner who initiates a feet-first slide is considered down at the point where he begins the slide. The defense has to treat that as the end of the play and cannot legally hit him once he has initiated the slide
