re: Shea says to not be surprised if Cai Bates doesn't end up in this class

So we apparently will be searching the portal for help in the secondary and defensive line for the third straight year. I know the roster was depleted when Kelly arrived, so taking a bunch from the portal was necessary.
But not being able to get quality high school recruits at those positions is setting us up for a continuing cycle of this year after year, and you can't win championships like that.
The recruiting has been pretty good except for those two spots. Stands to reason that we need to get rid of the defensive back coaches who can't recruit, and apparently can't coach. The defensive line coach is a different matter at this time, but we couldn't lure any defensive tackles last year, either.

Right. This shite is nuts and needs to be corrected.
There isn't much help on the d line next year after Wingo and maason leave.

Mason should not leave. Wingo should stay after getting hurt

Please no. Fire steeples if he leaves

We all wantthem to stay.
You have to prepare for them to leave.

Defense is easier to fix with money. If we keep hitting on QBs and ramp up the two most obvious weaknesses on the roster the championships will follow.

You guys realize that these two CBs could simply be seeing the awful talent development ag DB to date by Steeples and Cooks, thus saying “Nevermind, I’m out.”
Poor player development will cost recruits and what we have seen from those two has been bad. Can’t blame the kids.

Bro our secondary recruiting is really bad. This doesn’t help already one of the worst secondaries in the nation

No one can argue the validity of your point. We have been heavily dependent on the state over the years and our classes have been ranked accordingly based on the strength year to year. The strategy has worked to get us where we are in the pantheon of college football.
Wasn't the point of hiring Kelly, an established coach lacking only the big prize at the highest level, to improve from the norm? It's been proven lesser coaches can win here using that strategy. Why pay 100 mil over 10 years to remain at status quo when an up and comer would've sufficed at a much lower price tag? Fair or not the bar is Bama and UGA. Sustained dominance. Status quo doesn't accomplish that. It's been proven. Common sense says adjust the recruiting footprint. LA dominated classes supplemented from Texas and the SE isn't getting us where we want to be. Not for the price we are paying.

Never have I ever thought that we would have trouble landing high end defensive backs. Either we’re not up to par on NIL or our secondary coaches straight suck at recruiting their position.

If they aren’t seeing it, they are being told it by opposing schools

The only thing I really worry about here is Brian Kelly seems to take a minute when hiring new coaches, will he be stubborn and stick with our secondary coaches longer than needs be or will he be proactive.
He also seems to go out on a limb with coaches not having all the prerequisites that we are used to seeing. I mean if I was a coach and I recruited not so great I would fill my staff up with some bomb recruiters, here you need that and they need the ability to coach well

I’m going to clarify because this turned into something I didn’t think it would.
Shea says “still fluid, I don’t think he ends up at LSU”.

We are about to see tomorrow what the defensive back field looks like for next year.

That’s not what’s going on with Bates
Posted on 11/3/23 at 10:21 pm to Captain Crown
I was listening to someone on the radio before any of the rumors started who said his play has been underwhelming this year, as in took a lot of plays off, and not wanting to get involved in too much tackling and physicality. Don’t know how much that is true but I was kind of disappointed when I heard it.

I appreciate that info. It’s getting cut throat about info posted here now. We seem to have a split

Do you see Steeples mentioned by Woodland or Bernard Causey? Lsu gonna offer one more corner as well when Bates flips. And I don’t think Steeples will be involved in that recruitment either. I would be shocked at this point if he returns.

Sad reality. None of these kids were offered in camp. We're settling just to have bodies. Need new secondary coaches, and hopefully Lindsey back healthy very soon. Claiming "mid season evaluations "
