I have said for years that the poor quality of tackling in college and the NFL is inexcusable. Watch a rugby game to see what tackling really looks like. This kid looks to be a 100% committed form tackling on every play. I love it.

First, he's joining as a PWO, not a scholarship player. Second, why does the fact that he played at Nicholls make him the same player as Evans? Devin White and DJ Welter both played LB at LSU. Not saying the kid is going to be the DB version of Devin White; just mean that you can't consider two players the same caliber just because they both played at the same school previously.

Are you saying there is no difference from a players perspective if you have to try out for a team vs being actively recruited with a guaranteed spot on the roster?

Especially when you have other scholarship offers in hand? If you don’t understand the security in that, that’s on you

While we’re at it “commitment” isn’t an official NCAA term either. If you can’t handle that then this may not be the place for you.

Just curious, what is his listed size and weight? What star rating was he coming out of high school and was he passed over due to size? Kid looks like a baller. Could be a great addition. Welcome aboard Pig.

the term "walk on" is referred to often in NCAA bylaws and is indeed an official designation.

Example: (going off memory here) In section 16, somewhere, it says walk-ons can join in the training table, but have to pay. Walk-ons are specifically cited.

The only difference between a "walk on" and a "preferred walk on" is whether or not you were invited to walk on or not.

I'm not sure whether you are questioning the "preferred" part of PWO, or the "walk-on" part. If it is the "preferred" designation... no, it isn't part of the NCAA jargon. A PWO is simply a walk-on that was invited to do so and is therefore promised to be part of the 120 limit where a non-invitee isn't necessarily going to be on the team in any shape, form, or function.

He also does a great job of not leading with his helmet.

Jerit Roser interview with Cage

Roser mentions USC & Purdue were his other top options

“LSU had always been my dream school”

“I knew I wanted to enter the portal, wanted to take the risk to better myself & bet on myself”

“Schools called within 5 min of hitting the portal. Power 5, FBS & FCS schools. The LSU opportunity felt different.”

“Want to come in as a spark. Want to just react, run to the ball & be electrifying on the field.”

“Wants to get into the DBU room & face the competition to make me better. LSU puts guys in the league.”

Darren Evans joined the team days before the season started and wasn't expected to play as much as he did but injuries and opt outs bumped him up. Couple that with a coaching job that made Rocks and Sting look like JV players and you realize that wasn't all on him. That being said it would have been nice if Evans had gone the PWO route too but we had Norwalk depth most of last year.

Everything doesn’t have to be defined in the NCAA manual to exist.

A preferred walk-on is simply an invited walk-in that is allowed to participate in early fall camp. Schools are allowed 105 players when players report. There are 85 scholarship players, so the additional players are “preferred walkons.”

It’s not a complicated matter.

What? Ricks was a baller. He had a great year. Stingley looked fine when he wasn't hurt.

Darren evans wasn't a good use of the scholarship. Just think if we had the option of taking burns and Kaufman or burns and another te or receiver.

Not all 20 players above the 85 limit are "preferred " as you call them. These players are either non scholarship team members are non scholarship players with guaranteed roster spots.

RECRUITING RULES
NCAA PREFERRED WALK-ON: DO YOU KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS?

“NCAA Preferred Walk-on” is a term that is frequently seen on social media when a high-school athlete announces that they have accepted a “preferred walk-on” offer from a University’s coaching staff.

What exactly is an NCAA Preferred Walk-on? That term actually means nothing more than whatever that coaching staff intends it to mean.

At one university, an NCAA Preferred Walk-on may be guaranteed a spot on the team roster, while at another university, it may only mean that the athlete doesn’t have to go through an open tryout to participate in early Fall practices after classes begin.

What is more important for an NCAA Preferred Walk-on is whether they are considered “recruited” to their university team.

This can be an important factor in their opportunity to be immediately eligible if they decide to transfer after a year or two to a Division I program. For certain sports, it can mean the difference between being immediately eligible for competition and a scholarship at their new university, or serving a “year in residence” before they can compete.
