Recruiting is important, but it's not the determining factor of how good a player really is. Magazines add stars to certain athletes because it sells more subscriptions to certain fans bases. Truthfully, stars are tremendously overrated. Last year's NFL Pro Bowl is a prime example that stars are very overrated. Thirty seven players on last year's Pro Bowl rosters were three stars or less coming out of high school. If that doesn't convince you that stars are overrated, nothing will!

Would you rather have a San Jose States type roster?

It convinces me that you are either new to this discussion or impressively dense.

The liklihood of a five star making it to the NFL is greater than that of a four star, which is greater than that of a three star, etc. The reason there are more three stars in the Pro Bowl is that there are many more three stars.

Ratings, or stars, are not overrated. They are extremely important when evaluating a class. When evaluating an individual they are overrated. The player's offer list generally tells the tale, though.

How people can't see this is beyond me. When you have 20 5 stars compared to hundreds maybe thousands of 3 stars of course the odds are going to be much higher the 3 star makes it. A roster full of 4* - 5* players is most likely going to give you elite tier talent in college.

You're the typical college fan that believes everything he reads. I'm not saying some 4 and 5 stars don't pan out, but most are very overrated. Remember Russell Shepard and Ryan Perriolloux? These two were can't miss prospects and neither was nearly as good as advertised! There's a list of players like that on every major roster! I put more on coach evaluations than somebody trying to sell subscriptions that you have no clue to their background. Keep sending them your money, they love fans like you!

Fl St, Alabama, Ohio st and LSU are all averaging top 5 recruiting class before last season over four seasons or so and onlyLSU hasn't won a ship in that span.

Recruiting definitely helps. Coaching with recruiting is where it's at.

Well, in Russell Shepards defense, he was a prime example of playing under a coach who had no idea how to utilize talent and play them at their strengths. Shepard was the biggest waste of talent of the Miles era. Miles didn't have a clue how to use him.

Ryan Perrilloux was an awesome quarterback. Did you ever watch the guy play? He just couldn't stay out of trouble.

San Jose State is actually loaded with mostly 2*s and below. Them getting a 3* is equivalent to us getting a 5*.

Your argument is weak with your cherry picking. Fact is, it's a numbers game. There aren't that many 5 stars. You have to do percentages of 5, 4, and 3 stars separately. How do you think that will end up?

Yeah. Not this. Both those guys made it to the NFL. One, despite himself. The other, despite his coaching. Even Al Woods, who was unimpressive to say the least at LSU, has a nice NFL career going.

Horse shite. Russell was a QB in high school and a RB in the beginning of his career at LSU. The transition to WR was made early for Shepard, the only problem is that he wasn't ready. After a year in the pro's, he still wasn't ready. In fact, I believe he is presently on a roster and if so, still developing. Absolutely incredible athlete but didn't have the size for an SEC RB and his route running and hands kept him on the sidelines at LSU.

says the guy that doesn't understand basic math and uses the pro bowl as some kind of measuring stick

There are roughly 30-35 players rated as 5* every year. If every single one of them made the NFL and played for 10 years, that would be 350 players. There are roughly 1700 players in the NFL.

what you are doing is treating the perfect as the enemy of the good. 5* players make the NFL at a much higher rate than lower ranked guys, but due to shear numbers, more 3* and below will make the league.

The top 5 players of the 2013 class Were : Robert Nkemdiche, Chris Jones, Laremy Tunsil, Vernon Hargreaves III and Jaylon Smith. Nkemdiche, Tunsil and VHIII were all first rounds and Smith would have been if not for tearing his knee in the bowl and he still was the 2nd pick of the 2nd round. Jones went #37, that's 5th or so in the 2nd round.

The 2 are not exact opposites, have you noticed that the 5* tend to sign with the top schools? This is really one of the dumbest cliches out there. If the coaches released their board it would not be all the different from the services.

Alabama has more 4* and 5* players on their roster than they do 3*. They have been the gold standard in college football since 08-09, solely because Saban stockpiles the highest ranked players. If he had a roster of "underrated" 3* players, he wouldn't be having the success he's having. This myth you are trying to argue has been proven false over and over again.

Shepard signed as a FA in Charlotte, and is impressing in training camp. Likely will be the panthers #3-4 receiver this year as well as a special teams ace.
