Well, considering Bama's results on the field, if guys are a take for Bama, they are probably worthy. People say that offer lists are a better measure of a player's abilities than star rankings. If Saban offers a scholarship and accepts a commitment from a guy, he's evaluated the player extensively, and Saban has proven himself as the best recruiter in the nation over the last 15ish years. So is it really that crazy for the services to give a guy a bump based off of the best evaluator of talent wanting said player on his roster? Fans say they trust the coaches more than the services, this is the services trusting the coaches.

LSU simply needs to get the best recruits possible. I can assure you that this staff is looking at more than rankings to determine if they can play a key role here. Really a team needs a good mix of people, find the ones who fit your system best, while having the body type, athletic skills, and attitude to mature and grow into an elite player. At this time we have the exact amount of 3* players which LSU typically signs every year. We also have plenty of 4* committed and 5* guys who are extremly interested. As the season goes on you will see LSU tune up the heat and we will close strong. I have no doubt in my mind. GT

See what I mean. Season 4 or 5 for him?

Horse shite. Russell was a QB in high school and a RB in the beginning of his career at LSU. The transition to WR was made early for Shepard, the only problem is that he wasn't ready. After a year in the pro's, he still wasn't ready. In fact, I believe he is presently on a roster and if so, still developing. Absolutely incredible athlete but didn't have the size for an SEC RB and his route running and hands kept him on the sidelines at LSU.
I'm going to get a lot of hate for this, but I thought he was very overrated coming out of high school. You'd have to do some fishing in my post history, but I remember the extreme hype for him and I just couldn't get into it. I mean he was a really good athlete, but he wasn't amazingly fast or crazy shifty. He was the type of QB you'd see play for Rich Rod and almost nobody else but option based teams.
He couldn't run a lot between the tackles so you could only really use him for stuff like read option, end arounds, etc, and as a WR. I think he would have benefited greatly If he came in immediately with the mindset to play WR. Hopefully he'll explode in the NFL, or at least be decent.

The top 5 players of the 2013 class Were : Robert Nkemdiche, Chris Jones, Laremy Tunsil, Vernon Hargreaves III and Jaylon Smith. Nkemdiche, Tunsil and VHIII were all first rounds and Smith would have been if not for tearing his knee in the bowl and he still was the 2nd pick of the 2nd round. Jones went #37, that's 5th or so in the 2nd round.
Exactly
The top 3 players of 2014 went in the first round with the top 2 going in the first 4 picks. The 4th went to the 2nd round, the next two are still in school and will be top 2 round picks this year. The 7th was a first round pick and the 8th and 9th were shitheads. The 10th transfered from TAMU, but will be starting for Houston. Jamal Adams and Solomon Thomas also went in the top 10.
That means that after only 3 years, 4 of 2014's top 31 kids (all 5 stars) went in the first 6 picks. Seven kids have gone in the first round after only 3 years.
Does the OP understand that 21% of the 5 stars from 3 years ago went in the first round as early as they possibly could? Let's say there are 1000 3 stars that year. There would have needed to been 210 of them to go in the first round of 2017 to match what the 5 stars did. Not to forget all the early exit second round picks in Cam Robinson, Teez Tabor, Dalvin Cook, Malik McDowell, Joe Mixon, Raekwon McMillan, and JuJu Smith-Schuster
That means that 15 of the top 33 recruits of 2014 (again, all 5 stars) went in the first 2 rounds of the earliest draft they could go to. That is one off from being half of them.
This debate is nonsensical every time it's brought up.

Bullshite. I'll take my chances with a 5 or 4 star over a 3 any day and so would 99.99999% of the coaches.

Remember Russell Shepard and Ryan Perriolloux? These two were can't miss prospects and neither was nearly as good as advertised!
Ryan Perrilloux was an awesome quarterback. Did you ever watch the guy play? He just couldn't stay out of trouble.
Perrilloux's early departure from behavior issues IMO is part of the reason we have had qb issues. Seems like we still havnt fully recovered from that

Yes, they trick the NFL into drafting them after they trick every other college team into losing to them. How people can't see that the recruiting rankings for Bama are justified blows my mind.

This topic is discussed almost every couple of months and it has been proven to be false time and time again.
Stars do matter. Period. End of story.

Russell Shepard
still in the league and was underutilized by Miles. Not saying he would have been a star in college, but he could have been much, much better.

Ryan Perriolloux
Could have been a legend at LSU but screwed it up for off field antics.
So again, You're wrong.
The only area where I will agree that the sites tend to get it wrong are with Louisiana and Mississippi kids and sometimes TX kids are overrated. There should be more LA kids with 4/5 stars.

This still doesn't mean that they would have been a better college player. A 5 star is very typically more physically mature and therefore has a lower ceiling for improvement. Several of the Pro Bowlers you mentioned were not great college players, but very good. They kept working in the weight room and learning the game. A typical male is closer to 25 when they are truly physically mature. This is about the age when athletes
start hitting their prime.
While I was a golfer, not a football player, I was still filling out when I got out of college.

When Russell Shepard committed to LSU I watched his highlight tape. He ran 80% of the time. I knew then he would never play QB at LSU.

Totally agree! All these people stating that stars dont matter. Just let Ark/Miss St/ South Carolina tell you about all Them SEC/National Championships they have in their trophy Case playing with teams made up of mostly 3 star players.

If lsu offers a player then they are at least a 4 star talent. They wouldnt offer a 3 star unless it was late in the recruiting cycle and they just needed more bodies

When people try to interpret stats to prove something wrong and end up being completely wrong themselves it always make me laugh

Lets see, today marks the 10th straight year that Bama starts the AP at #1. They do this with 5 star players, not a bunch of serviceable 3's!!! Grow up!

Well, in Russell Shepards defense, he was a prime example of playing under a coach who had no idea how to utilize talent and play them at their strengths. Shepard was the biggest waste of talent of the Miles era. Miles didn't have a clue how to use him.
This is completely stupid. He was behind better players, who Miles put into the NFL. It's probably a credit to Miles and Shepard that he got enough coaching in college, despite not being a starter, to make it to the NFL.
Would you rather Shepard to have played in front of Odell Beckham, Jr. or Jarvis Landry? What about Brandon Lafell? Or Rueben Randal? Maybe he should have played in front of Trindon Holiday? These were all guys that were at LSU at the same time as Shepard and were drafted.
