I like Chest but I’m just not sure how much he plays. McMohan disappointed me with his lack of effort to integrate the freshman into games last year. I can’t see him carving a role out for Chest right off the bat. I’m interested to see how Ward and Reed progress, assuming they don’t leave

We need another perimeter shooter too. Cook and Wright will help but other than them everyone is adequate at best. We need more 40 percenters.

So he didn’t stretch the defense because he could knock down the 3? Interesting. You watch him any this year or just the tournament?
I’ve watched the majority of UConn games and seen Sanogo for 3 years. Taking 1 three a game does not make somebody a stretch 5. 90% of the time he is underneath the basket.
Jake Stephens, KJ Williams, Drew Pember, Jack Nunge, Grant Basile and Branden Carlson are examples of stretch 5s this year. Sanogo’s skill set is completely different than these players

They need to grab a 2 guard from one of these lesser conferences. Someone who was the player of the year or top scorer in a conference.
That would be my approach. We are probably not going to get the cream of the crop from the bigger conferences, so grab some top players from lesser conferences.

I think Chest will play a good bit. He reminds me of Emmitt Williams but with better ability in treansition. I think he’ll show ability to stretch as he matures, too,
Emmitt as a freshman gave you 7/5 in 20mpg. I think Chest can give you that.

both incoming players are better in advanced metrics than KJ who was our best player last year. KJ wasnt really that good because his defense was awful.
another huge factor is that mwani wilkinson is a shutdown defender and SEC level athlete and his return is big.
if we get a league average center in addition to the current additions, its unquestionable the team is better.
cook is an upgrade on both ends of the ball. so is wright. chest is a magnficent athlete like mwani and no one else.
last year the total inability of the tiny guards to shoot from outside bogged down the entire offense. add amaree abram to the guards we now have and that should be much better. and that will be a massive change to what they can do offensively.

He would absolutely fit a need. We've got to have a rim protector, and he is that.
Can't score other than right around the goal (he's one of the worst free throw shooters in the country, too), but he gives you 8 rebounds a game and two blocks a game playing 18 minutes or so. That would be plenty if we paired him with somebody like Baker who can shoot from the high post.

KJ wasn't a great defender. But he was far from awful. He had a positive defensive +/- rating and decent (for this team) defensive rating. Combine that with the fact he was a top 5 offensive player in the league (efficiency and raw numbers), and he is a big loss no matter how much optimism you pump in trying to downplay it.

Is he? I feel like we've been saying this about Wilkinson for 3 years now. Yet, despite two years of starting he's been a complementary piece, at best. Not a game-changer by any means. Certainly it would have been nice to have him last season, but it's hard to say his return is "big".

Offensively, yes. Defensively? Maybe. He was ok at Tulane defensively. Not great.

What? LSU had ONE "tiny" guard. Hill. The rest were 6'3 (Miller), 6'3 (Hayes), 6'3" (J. Williams), 6'2 (Hannibal)

Abram was a solid player for Ole Miss. He's a guy you take if he wants in. But he wasn't terribly efficient. He shot 40% overall and only 68% from the FT line. He also had an Asst/TO ratio of 1:1. That's not great.
He was a freshman. He has ability. He showed some flashes with big games last season. But he also had several rough ones as well. There is no doubt he is someone you hope will continue to develop. But I'm not ready to say simply sticking him in the line up will bring about "massive" change.

This is a major swing and a miss right here
Assuming we get the kid from Nevada, it's a downgrade specifically there

If KJ fouled out, there was no chance we were gonna score over 40 in game this year, so he couldn't play very physical on defense.

KJ was an average defensive player by basically any metric. He was a VERY good offensive player and was good on the offensive glass.
For that other guy to call him not that good is a gigantic over exaggeration, we arent finding someone better more than likely in that specific situation.
The center from Nevada who seems like we lead for isnt as good offensively (but thats his strength) and provides zero rim protection for a 7 footer as well as doesnt really rebound much.
We are going to miss KJ a ton, but certainly still can get a better team depending on who all we land. Just thought it was funny someone was trying to actually downplay how good KJ was for us.

KJ was great for the team, but I don’t think he was a good defender. I also don’t think he was awful. Will Baker is also not a great defender, but also not awful. Will is slightly more efficient offensively than KJ. KJ was only getting 9.4 rebounds per 40 minutes, to Will’s 8.1, so the difference is small in rebounding too. So if we get Will Baker, I think he will be very close to what we got from KJ. Will will be a downgrade, but he will come close to filling the gap left by KJ. I think Baker can do as well as KJ offensively, but with Cook he won’t have to, and Baker could be comparable defensively, since he won’t have to fear fouling out. Both are more offensive players.
Cook and Wright are upgrades, so with Will, I think we will be a better team overall. If we get Baker, then the key to our success will be who fills the last 2 spots. I hope 1 is a good rim protector that isn’t otherwise a liability.

i subscribe to an analytics site and it shows his defensive numbers are negative. you have numbers showing his defensive analytics to be good?

There's analytics and then there's the fact that without KJ Lsu doesn't win hardly any games last season.

KJ's defense was bad from an eye test perspective too, even in non-conference play. The difference between KJ and a player like Juice Hill is their contribution on the other side of the ball.
Hill was a negative on both sides of the ball which is why he got so much hate. KJ's defense was bad but when you drop 30 and 10 and carry a team to victory it doesn't really matter.
