You can enter the portal and return. The issue is you have to enter the portal to have any ability to go to a different school and you have to do so before the draft takes place.

I have heard but always hate posting this stuff. Stanfield wants to test draft & Cowan is expected back

We know that, but is he there because he thinks one of Frey/Stanfield comes back? What if they don’t? Had to enter if they do, I bet he comes back if those two go pro.
I doubt that, even with both of them gone, he would still have to earn a spot between any incoming new freshman/transfers. He hasn't shown he is good enough to lock that down yet, so he is doing what he thinks best and trying to find a place where there is a clearer path to him starting, which I can't blame him.

If that would be the case then I feel like he would've entered with a no contact tag

We have no portal outfielders. Can't worry about freshmen. They've never even had a college practice. Almost none of them are ever ready to start regardless of ranking.

Who do we have on the roster right now that could play the OF?
Posted on 7/2/25 at 11:15 am to ccox11
I mean Larson started a bunch as a freshman and Derek Curiel just was a starter for an entire year...
I'm sure Jay has a plan if both Frey/Stanfield are gone. If he was worried, I would expect him to have already been on a few OF players.

He didn’t show that two years ago? Not sure what to tell you the kid is legit.

Daniel Harden coming in from JUCO.

Exactly. Curiel was ready. 1 offensive player in 4 years under Jay. You can go back historically. That's about the rate. A few others have played but those teams weren't great in large part because those players weren't ready. I don't even discuss freshmen with regards to the lineup until after the fall. No freshmen have anything to do with Larson.

We just forgot about Steven Milam I guess?
Josh Pearson hit .299 with a .956 OPS his freshman year
Steven Milam hit .326 with a .931 OPS
Ashton Larson hit .300 as a true freshman.
Yes, Curiel was the best one but he wasn’t the only one. Plus, the freshman group has gotten more talented every year Jay is here and when Jay got here, our position player group was solid and there wasn’t much room for freshman to start. I don’t think it’s unreasonable at all to assume a freshman somewhere grabs a spot next year.

Jay said in an interview recently that there is basically no coming back once you enter the portal. You have to be all in.

Neal also started a ton as a freshmen till his back injury.

I am very excited for him to get to campus. Big upside. 71 free passes, and 79 hits is a great statistic to bring in.

He said there is room for exceptions. The poster is insinuating that this may have been an agreed upon route between Jay and Larson since the portal closes before the draft. By all accounts Larson has been a great teammate so it wouldnt surprise me. I wouldve expected this to be a quick commit to Fitz but it hasnt happened yet. Also Larsons gf I believe is a cheerleader for the Saints. Hard to leave that behind

Ashton Larson can't be guaranteed a starting position over freshmen. Freshmen can play. As evidence, see Ashton Larson. Lol

By the way, I talked to Chris Stanfield's mom briefly at one of the regional games and she was basically talking about watching him at the Box in the past tense. Not that this is different than we think-- just some additional information.
She did say they were going to come back for some games even after Chris was gone.
