Washington is 25%-ish 5th and 6th year seniors.

This is a fluke due to Covid.

I don’t disagree, but five of those years he coached Sioux Falls, a school in South Dakota with an undergraduate enrollment of just over a 1000.

Lol what does that even mean? What other context is there for star rankings?

The portal, development, coaching, scheme, attrition, … etc etc … etc…

He has a better record in FBS than he did there.

Nope, he had a MUCH better record at Sioux Falls than FBS. Sioux Falls 67-3...Fresno State 12-6...Washington 25-2. Once again, let's see what he does NEXT season at Washington since his sample size of games so far at UW is tiny.

Lol. He’s a top 5 coach in football today. He’s 104-11 in 8 years as a head coach.

Stop throwing around this top 5 coach shite so easily. I don't care what somebody did at Sioux Falls or Fresno St. People talk shite about Kelly if you bring up Grand Valley St and Cincinnati.

He's done excellent at Washington, but I've seen several guys come in and pull off great seasons with lightning in a bottle teams only to fall back down to what their real level is. For example, look at his recruiting classes. They are 29th this year and 29th last year. That is not going to sustain you.

If you want to see a true future top 5 head coach, it's Dan Lanning. He has the backing at Oregon, the brand recognition, the recruiting is right around top tier, and he's building his teams like top southern teams build (in the trenches). He convinced Dante Moore to sit yet another year while a ready made heisman contender in Dillon Gabriel becomes a one year stop gap for a transition.

This is why I say some of yall pay attention to nothing outside of LSU and star ratings. If you did, you'd have noticed that he played pretty good at Indiana outside of one year. He was also injury prone there too. In 2020, in 5 games he had 1600 yards and 14 TD passes. He lost to the eventual national championship contender Ohio St team, on the road, by 7 points. HE was averaging around 320 passing yards a game. Say for instance it was a 13 game schedule. He was on pace for 4160 yards and 36 TDs (basically what he's doing at Washington). I remember when he got hurt too. If he didn't, that team would have went 7-1.

Penix is one of those typical misevaulated QBs based on where he plays his high school ball among other things. Lamar Jackson is another misevaulation from Florida.

Great teams are going to beat collections of great players. Ideally, you have a great team composed of great players, but as the man said, "You can't always get what you want."

So, of the two options, it is far better to build a team that has great chemistry and plays well together (e.g. the 2011 defense), than a group of "me first" guys who happen to be great individual football players.

Sure, when you have a team composed of superstars - AND they play well together (e.g. the 2019 offense), that is typically quite special (and rare).

I believe both Michigan and Washington have many players who have been in the program for four and five years. They developed.

This. I’ve never put much stock in star status. Seen too many 5* get the big head and bust. Get the guy that wants to be here and work… he’ll make you proud.

I believe Washington and UM are 4-5 year senior laden teams. The biggest issue for the SEC and 5 star recruiting is they jump to the NFL after 3 years.

It is still probably a better formula to recruit the 5 star guys, have them leave in 3 years and replace them as your NC formula than relying on guys sticking around for 4-5 years. However the roster filled with lots of experience does pay off sometimes.

I'll give you an obvious supporting example of this statement. Know the guy Matt Campbell at Iowa State? EVERY PROGRAM wanted that guy when ISU finished in the top 10 one season. Come to find out he had a guy named Brock Purdy at QB and David Montgomery at RB...two players that almost no one had heard of then. Now, you hardly hear Campbell's name mentioned for college openings. As you said "lightning in a bottle". We can also include our own Ed Orgeron in that thunderstorm also.

Cool, Maybe if we look at history it will bolster your argument. Let's see. 247 offers a team talent composite based on rankings of scholarship players on the team that season.

Here are the participants in the finals

Michigan #14
Washington #24

Here are the CFP champions and where they were ranked

2015 Alabama #1
2016 Clemson #9
2017 Alabama #1
2018 Clemson #6
2019 LSU #5
2020 Alabama #2
2021 Georgia #2
2022 Georgia #2

If UGA were in the playoff there is a good chance they'd be in the title game.

That does not matter. Like I said, future top five. It's like yall forget the 6 years it took before Kirby Smart went on a run.

Washington has lightning in a bottle. Oregon has a program.
