Smaller schools landing big fish was always the bigger possibility than "the rich getting richer."
The rich can't get much richer, no matter how much they pay. They already get most of the players they want, have limited scholarships and limited playing time.
But there are dozens of schools that can scrape together a few million a year to tempt a 5-star. This may be a good thing or a bad thing, but the "rich getting richer" is the least of concerns with NIL.

You must be a young pup son. I remember in the 60s and early 70s when Grambling and Alcorn State had more NFL players than LSU and Alabama. Jerry Rice, Walter Payton, Mel Blount, Art Shell, Night Train Lane (i think) etc etc etc

That will change with some corporate sponsorships. Grambling put a lot of players in the NFL in the fifties and sixties. It's not farfetched to think there could be a resurgence under the right circumstances.

I would be ecstatic if that were to happen.

Are you saying that because you hope it is true? If a kid goes to an HBCU and he can play, he can play. The NFL has drafted over 100 kids from Grambling back in the day starting in 1955. Between 1955 and 1970, 50 of those were drafted. Since then only 50 more, which of course coincides with the SEC being desegregated. Grambling produced 4 NFL HOF, Willie Davis the great Oakland Raider CB in the 60's/70's, Willie Davis the DE for Lombbardi's Packer teams and Buck Buchanan the great DL for the great KC Chief teams in the late 60's and early 70's and Charlie Joiner of Many, LA for the Chargers. Walter Payton, JSU, Jerry Rice, Prairie VIew, etc.
With the way things are today, and I don't want to get into social commentary, I could see major US corporations investing money in NIL deals at HBCU's given their lack of alums in positions of power at Fortune 500/1000 companies.
Barstool sports apparently is investing money in Travis Hunter's NIL deal once he starts playing for JSU. I think they can come up with some marketing platform that they use on their social media to attract followers that now maybe are not following them. Black folks spend money like everyone of else.

I agree, I remember my Father, who saw his first LSU game in person in 1958, talking about Grambling in the 60's and he always said they had teams that could have competed against the SEC. From the 1955 NFL draft (first year Grambling had a pick) to 1970 draft (when SEC was Desegregated, etc.), LSU had 52 NFL picks. 2 of them, Jimmy Taylor and Johnny Robinson would be NFL HOF.
Grambling's first NFL pick was 1955 and from that to 1970 (again, about the time of Desegregation in the SEC) they had 50 NFL picks including 4 NFL HOF, Willie Davis, Willie Brown and Buck Buchanan and Charlie Joiner. Brown was in fact signed as a free agent, not even drafted.
As a kid in the 1970's I saw lots of those guys play on TV, Willie Davis was retired, but Brown, Buchanan, Joiner, you add Ed Too Tall Jones, Walter Payton, Harold Carmichael who played at Southern, etc, there were tons of HBCU players in the NFL back in the 1970's when I first started watching the NFL.
I saw my First LSU game in 1970 vs. Ole Miss and the first great Black player that I remember LSU having was Mike Williams the DB from Covington, that was around 73-74. Williams was a 1st round pick in the 75 NFL draft.

The fact that this makes sense to some is just proof of the giant extortion that is going on today in “social justice”.

How do you put the genie back in the bottle — don’t see a path.
I did expect the landscape to change completely, honestly. Been in denial but everyone knows deep down.

Has nothing to do with nil, and everything to do with hbcu’s hiring hall of fame players to coach. They’d get more nil money at a big program.
It’s actually a pretty good situation for all sides involved. These former stars like Deion and Eddie George want to coach but don’t want to start at the bottom and grind their way to the top like most guys have to. (Understandable with their money and knowledge) . Hbcu cant afford an established coach but gets a splash hire and some recruits. I like this trend.

have you ever visited an HBCU campus? It ain’t gonna last or be a thing.

Just more publicity. I want to see how much Hunter's deal is worth

Posted on 12/15/21 at 12:21 pm to deathvalleyfreak43
I’m fine with it. Take the money now and miss out on a larger investment in your development by going to a school that has actually invested in it

Well I am not going to get into the politics of it. I am not. The reality is that 1) a coach like Sanders can tell a young recruit come to an HBCU and not worry about getting criticized about your political beliefs, 2) Fortune 500 companies that have Boards that lean to the left can see it as an Investment in HBCU's. HBCU's make up only about 3% of the over roughly 6,000 Universities and colleges in USA, about 10% of Black students are enrolled in those schools and they produce about 20% of Black College Graduates.
So yes it could indeed happen. Like everything else, the market place will sort it all out. I think many in the college football industry (Media, Recruiting blogs and services, coaches, ESPN) are going to watch what happens with Travis Hunter. He goes to JSU gets a large NIL deal from Barstool, plays 3 years and then gets drafted to NFL and has a good career, can potentially be a game changer in my view.

First getting paid for college football; next HBCUs getting good publicity & players.

Would be nice if Southern could be good again. 2003 was cool when both LSU and Southern had excellent seasons.

No one wants to acknowledge this part. People fake care until things occur that could potentially level the playing field, and then all of a sudden it's unfair.

Once the money comes calling for Deion to get a power 5 job, he will leave for more money too.
And for people saying he doesn't need the money, it doesn't matter how much money you got, you always want more. If you say otherwise you are lying to yourself
