There's a certain set of posters that will deride everything McMahon does.

Big pickup for next year.

Any chance Hunter Dean gets another year of eligibility?

no he was already a 5th year player, one at southern miss, 3 at GW

I'd be willing to bet the opposite is true. And Givens might even back up Mike Williams too

I think that if sears starts the season at PG he will lose minutes over time to givens. Williams will play very little PG. he is not a PG and only did it out of emergency duty before cook was eligible

I’ll hold my breath on this guy.

3rd year in a row we are bringing in a difference maker at PG.

1st 2 have not worked out. Hope this one does

Not sure. Hanson was a decent player at LSU, but was nothing like when he played for whoever and absolutely lit LSU up. We never saw that guy at LSU.

Well, this is where statistics get you in trouble if you're not using context. He was a top 10 pick and roll guard in the country. I want to say he was #6 last season, Cook was #10. He fits our system perfectly and he was 9th in the nation in scoring. I'd say that's elite.

You can look at it a few ways. Maybe Hannibal's BPR shot up so much because of the system he was in(this has to be impossible though because MM can't develop players), and maybe Sears was lower because he was literally the only offense on that team....did you think of it that way?

You are right that context matters. To that end, UT Martin played at the 7th fastest pace in the nation and was in the top 20 in terms of FG attempt per game. Faster tempo=more possessions=(generally) more shots=more points.

McMahon has talked about wanting to play fast. LSU did that to some degree this season and, in the process, turned the ball over a TON...which is why their offense was so inefficient. For his part, Sears was in the top 30 in the nation in terms of most turnovers. Now, that has to be taken into context as well. More possessions = more opportunities for turnovers. 3 TOs per game for low possession team is awful. 3 TOs per game for a high possession team may not be that bad.

That aside, most aren't knocking the pick up. LSU NEEDED an experienced PG. And they got one. It's just that most are taking a wait and see approach before getting overly excited. Which is pretty reasonable given LSU has a losing record over the last two years and most of the transfers, particularly at PG, haven't been huge impact players just yet.

He was obviously a good fit for there system but still only rated out as the 6th best player on the team.

Look dude I get that you really like the advanced metrics like EvanMiya but at some point you have to take your eyes off of the metrics and actually watch the game. I don't care what an advanced metric says, Knecht was by far Tennessee's best player. And considering his stats and accolades, I would argue that that's not an opinion but a fact. I have no idea whether Sears will work out at LSU or not. But I see you in countless threads on players just simply throwing out their metric rating to judge a player. Its an aspect but there is so much more to judging a player than simply what a calculator says

Maybe the mysterious Corey Chest will be a big help in that area, if in fact he’s real.

1st, the point of my comment wasn't to diss on Knecht or turn this thread into a discussion about him. My point stands, he wasn't even on the radar last season and excelled in Tennessess's system this season. I don't know why people took that as some kind of diss on Knecht. Maybe next time I'll focus group my words before posting

I was simply pointing out that Mark Sears was a star before he showed up at Bama, and Knecht was an unknown before showing up at Tenn, and this was clear in their respective BPR before moving to current schools. Also, he did rate out as the sixth best player, but go back and read my post; I didn't say he was the sixth best player but said he RATED out sixth best. That is relevant b/c the whole conversation was around BPR and not seasonal awards.

2nd, Mark Sears should have been the SEC POY.

Next season's team with this freshman class and transfers is shaping up to be pretty talented.

You’d like to think that, but after reading a lot of these posts, we will have no one on the team comparable to Bird or Jordan and I’m now feeling miserable about LSU basketball.

Using BPR as your preferred way to rate a player and then mentioning that it rated Dalton Knecht 6th on his own team is not exactly helping your argument…clearly this efficiency stat does not scale well with varying usage rates

Actually he was that player but didn't need to shoot less. He was the outside threat LSU needed in 1991 as they won the SEC title. However he contracted mono in the last few weeks of the season and never fully recovered his strength. This was a key factor in the Tigers losing to Georgia Tech in the second round.
