..him?

You give a school the top recruiting class every year, and we could pick a coaching staff of Ranters and they would win 10 games per season.

Who recruits the players and hires the coaches to direct them?

Could not get:

Dumb thread. Saban is the greatest coach in CFB maybe ever.

Saban is a very good coach, look what he did quickly here and at Bama, didn't even need his own players to turn both teams around pretty quick. Yeah the talent helps, but he proved at both stops he can still win some games early on.

Year 2 at LSU - 10-3, SEC champs, finished #7 in country; 2 years previous to that LSU was 3-8
Year 2 at Alabama - 12-2, SEC title game, finished #6 in country; 2 years previous to that Bama was 6-7

Not like he was starting all freshmen and sophomores those years at either school

so you’re saying if Saban left, the best recruits will still go there?

5-8 years ago, Saban had to buy 95% of out of state players. All out bidding war wins.
Now, truthfully he has some Fandads (see Dylan Moses's dad) who think when they are invited into his office they are talking peer-to-peer with him and obviously there is some residual effect from the championships to the point he probably only has to spend big money on 3-5 players per class whereas 5-8 years ago he had to spend big money on 13-15 per class.
Of course this continuing is all dependent on Alabama continuing to win championships. If they ever start losing even 2-3 games per season then Saban will have to revert back to spending a lot more money or the reality will hit these out-of-state kids that you are committing to 3-4 years of your prime funtime to Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

It's a combination of being guaranteed championship rings and money/jobs for the relatives. It's like kids don't want the challenge of fighting for something these days. It's like the participation trophy culture

Said he's definitely the greatest recruiter of all time which is what makes a great college coach these days. Pretty good coach on par with a lot of other good dedicated coaches but has team of all stars to work with.

Year 3 8-5 at LSU. Give him the best players in the country to work with, a virtual College All-Star team of the best talent the country has to offer and he's not going to lose many games

People say just beat Bama and this will change. Maybe you could sneak up on them when they didn't have a quarterback but looks like those days are over. I don't think beating them if this is even possible these days would change anything

One thing he definitely learned at LSU was getting Louisiana kids was vital to building the program, wherever you are.

That's why buying Landon Collins (and his girlfriend and her mom) and Cam Robinson and Louisiana native DJ Fluker was so important. He had to know even winning 80% of the in-state battles with Auburn wasn't going to suffice. You could compete for championships with that base, but to put yourself over the top you had to go spend money in Louisiana. One of Les's greatest foibles was letting that happen.

I don't think this is true across the board. I think Saban figures out what is most important to each recruit and sells them exactly that.

For example, I think if we had been holding our own against Alabama over the last several years, we would have landed one or more out of Moses, Allen and Surtain.

However, I don't think any amount of winning would have helped with Mathis, Buggs and now Sopsher.

There is some truth to this. The reason why Saban is the best college football coach is because he is the best college football recruiter.

The NFL humbled Saban. There is no recruiting in the NFL where parity reigns. The NFL is the league where head coaches can fairly be judged by Xs and Os.

The verdict on Saban in terms of Xs and Os? Average.

What Saban lacks on Xs and Os he makes up for on the recruiting trail. Talent can hide A LOT of coaching deficiencies. When you have a team that has sufficient talent line up and run basic offense and defense you don't have to be a special Xs and Os guy.

Saban is the best at recruiting but he gets better because he has probably the strongest supporting cast in terms of network, REC and a 24/7/365 fan base. Saban wins games in the fall on national signing day.

It's amazing how poorly Dennis Franchione and Mike Shula recruited for bama before Saban.

There's a lot of schools buying players and not winning 5 games.

Bama's just better at it and is giving more of it. And Saban is still a damn good coach.
