Zero Turn Mower Rec's

Hoping Lawn Wizards of the board can point me in right direction. 1 acre of grass to Mowe....mixed centipede & bermuda.... likely transitioning to all Bermuda over next 2yrs.
Open to new or used in great shape.
Initial research says avoid "light duty" zero turns (JD, Toro etc). Hustler line is frequently recommended. The nomenclature has changed for what is "residential" vs "commercial" over the years. Used 42" w/ 20ish hp motors are $2,500-$3,500 on FB marketplace and New $5k+ tax.
Questions:
*Any brand or model recs?
*Any brand/model/years to avoid?
*Kawasaki vs Briggs vs ______ motor preferences?
*Any transmission to prioritize/avoid? Some are "user serviceable" others aren't.
*Anything else to consider, besides local service options?
Bottom line - I'd prefer "overbuilt" and simple future proof maintenance options
New option -- Hustler Raptor XD 42"

The big box stores will use lighter gauge steel and their front spindles on the front tires will be unsealed units and the spindles for the blades will be lighter grade. Basically, if you hit anything in the ground you don't see it'll bend and flex the metal. Really suggest looking at the steel around the front wheel spindles to make sure they're relatively beefy. I also have the Kawasaki motor on my Gravely ZT52 (residential unit). I've had my mower for about 8 years and all I've done is the routine maintenance and replaced the battery. I have no complaints about my mower. One thing I will look for on my next mower is a suspension seat. I have 2.5 acres and my back is a wreck after I mow for 2 or 3 hours on my mower.

I have the Hustler Raptor XD and I like it. Just my second year with it but haven't had any issues with it. Has the Kawasaki engine. Just ordered a mulching kit I'm waiting to come in and have it installed.
One thing to keep in mind is the hour meter is attached to the battery and not the spark plug. Ran out of gas one day and it was starting to rain so I just pulled it into my shop, never turned the key to off. Go out the next day after adding gas to finish cutting and noticed the hour meter with an extra 25 hours on it. Not a big deal to me because I plan on keeping it as long as I can but after googling about it some people were pissed about it because they would run their gas out before winterizing it and forget about turning the key off. That obviously racked up a bunch of hours the weren't actual running time hours. Would obviously ruin resale value if someone wanted to sell or upgrade.
ETA: Seems to be only Hustler that does the hour meter this way.

Lots of threads on zero turn recommendations. It’s really about preference and potentially accessibility of parts/service.
In general, avoid a big box store and use a dealer. This will help ensure you get what you need.
Too many people default to the “get a commercial grade mower”, which is completely unnecessary. Certain aspects of each mower are more important than others. For 1 acre of residential use, you’ll get a ton of usage out of just about any level machine.
Gravely, Hustler, Bad Boy are some of the most common. I have a Gravely HD and owned a Hustler Raptor SD before.
Key features would be obviously deck size, but also gauge. Kawasaki engines are generally considered better than others. Serviceable transmissions and spindles aren’t that critical compared to just being “heavy duty” enough for use.
I’ve bought all of mine used with <50 hours. The Gravely only because it was during COVID and inventory was non-existent. Looking to go to a 60” soon, but likely not for another year or two. I’ve had good luck buying used, then selling a few years later for a newer model.

I went and looked at gravely yesterday. Was back and forth between the zt34” and ztx42”. For the money, the 42 was worth it. Bigger tires and engine, more comfortable seat and arm rests, heavy duty deck, led lights, access compartment to belts, better warranty, etc for 300$ more. I bought the 42”, had a mulching kit installed, and had it delivered for 5k out the door.

I have a standard hustler raptor 42” that’s I’ve had about it 5 years. It has the Kohler engine. The starter went out last summer but other than that it’s been very reliable

Local Hustler Dealer has a promo on the Raptor XD 48's for $4900 out the door coming up. Found comparable low unit mowers on FB for $3.5k ish.
Will give Gravely a call tmrw when they open

I looked at the scag 36 as well. I have a 100x150 lot with zero trees or stumps and it was too much for me as far as commercial vs residential. Actually the gravely is probably too much but the price was better

My Scag (Kawaski engine) has been rock solid in my 6 years of ownership. It costs a little more, but it stays out of the shop.

Basically anything.
Im cutting 3 acres with a john deere 375r (box store model o noz). 250 hours on it and I've only changed the vacuum line for the fuel pump. I think it was $3,800 and I can do my 3 acres in an hour and 20 minutes.
I wouldn't buy a john deere now just because I don't like their company but I'd just get the best deal I could find on a 48" zero turn of any reputable brand.

for a 1 acre lot and no plans to use the machine commercially then a Hustler raptor would be more than adequate. I had a raptor for almost 12 years without any issues until the end..I had over 800 hours on it..I was going to buy another until I found a Scag liberty z on marketplace with less that 50 hours on it for a little less than a new raptor would cost so i bought it..same size machine. the liberty z is scag's "residential" mower and I can tell you it cuts better, is faster, and is overall better built but if bought new it would have been alomost 2k more than the raptor...Its definately a better machine but not 2k better..The raptor will serve you just fine, as will the gravely ztx or just about any other at that pricepoint

Just don’t get the Gravely Engine. Go with the Kohler or Kawasaki.

Going on my 3rd year with a BadBoy ZT Elite, zero issues. Just started it up first key turn for my first cut Monday after sitting outside under my covered barn since Oct/Nov.

I have a 42" Bad Boy Rambler and it's a great machine
Don't go get a shitty stamped mower from HD/Lowes. Go get a solid, welded machine from a local lawn place

I bought a 50" Toro Myride last summer from a dealer for a 1 ac. yard. It's been good thus far and easy to do routine service. I bought it to ease stress on my knees and hips, but more so to have a link with a company that services what they sell. Not saying it's the best mower, but it works for me.

I’ve got the 60 inch ZT elite limited. So it’s the elite frame with the maverick engine, tires and seat. I can’t recommend it enough. I love that thing.

With only one acre of grass, why not go electric? I mow 2 acres with a greenworks 42. Cuts better than most and zero maintenance, no oil no gas not belts, no starter or battery. Quiet and plenty of power 2 speeds, I only use the slow speed be cause I cut around flower beds. I’m not going back to gas ever. It has a hitch to hook up my garden trailer. This thing can run one six batteries but I’m only using four and does the whole 2 acres and can charge it back up in 1 1/2 hours.
