I've had both gas and charcoal over the years. Currently i have a akorn (BGE steel knockoff) that is near the end of it's service life. What do you get, a Weber gas grill or a name brand ceramic charcoal?

If I had a spare $1000, I wouldn't buy one thing. I'd buy three. I'd buy a Weber kettle, a Weber Smokey Mountain, and a Blackstone griddle. Those three would take care of all my outdoor cooking needs without having to work around the weaknesses of certain grills. But that's me. YMMV. Not everyone wants or needs three things.

and as i posted this is see walmart has the kamado joe on sale $599.00
good advice but i don't have much room on my back porch for all three. weber does make some solid pits. I do have the mini version of the kettle.

I’d get a pellet grill and leftover money for accessories and pellets

Buy a Weber and give the rest to needy people

Get a ceramic grill.
Mine is a 10yr old Primo and going strong.
There is no end of service life with a ceramic.
ETA: I’m cooking a turkey on it right now.

A real BGE, a pellet grill, or a combo gas/charcoal

For $1K I would get a ceramic charcoal grill and a pellet grill. And you would still have some money left over for accessories.

A full frontal lobe review. I've had them all. And the best one I ever had is the one I have now. Or the best two I might add. I like to hands on cook and you need heat, smoke and a place to put the meat. So I replaced all those fancy rigs with two small (on closeout) $100. grills from Home Depot. The most exotic thing I cook is two Boston Butts. Up at 5 AM which is a pleasure, smoke 'em low and slow til 11:30. Take 'em off and re-do the rub and juice wrap 'em and put them in the oven @ 220 for about 3.5 to 4 hours of the old Texas crutch. Close to the same recipe for my other beeef/pork/rib preps. Falling off the bone, deep smoke ring, and absolutely perfect. And bullet proof.

Weber e-310 Spirit gas grill and a Masterbuilt pellet smoker.

2/3 on a gas grill, 1/3 on a smoker.

You can get a Traeger 780 Pro at Ace for $999.99 right now. That's a solid buy.

Just a heads up, that's the OG model that has the 1 piece firebox. If you get it, crank it the frick up and crack the firebox. They'll send you the updated one for free.

True value.com still has deep Weber gas grill discounts. If you're in the market for a gas grill, get one at a discounted rate. You can get the 4 burner Genesis 2 for $600.
4 burner is pretty large, but the 3 burner seems just right,
