More power to those folks who cruise neighborhoods in their pickup trucks looking for potentially valuable stuff at the roadside on trash today. I am the opposite of a Greeny, but waste seems. . . like a waste, and better put to good use than lying in some landfill

Having said that, what possible potential value would inspire someone to pick up my 15-year-old Rusty hot water heater from the roadside?

Maybe 40 or 50 bucks. Stainless steel is like 25 cents a pound.

not worth your time or energy. Scrap prices are low low right now and ferrous material pays by the ton. Most household appliances like these are also shreddable material grade which is worth less money than bare "clean" metal.

I've previously managed a large metal recycling facility.

Seriously, where did you find this? I had one stolen from a rental property last week and they flooded the whole duplex.

If you are asking me, the OP, I was merely searching for an explanation for why someone would have bothered to take away the broken hot water heater that I put out for garbage collection.

Sadly, I ended up having to buy a brand new one. Despite the effort, yours was just the wrong size.

gas or electric?

If gas they may have wanted the burner if electric they may have wanted heating elements/controlers.

Either way about 40 bucks.

Probably some redneck who simply wanted more yard art but thinking back about a few post recently they likely thought some DA is throwing away a perfectly good water heater that just needs a $7.99 PRV or thermocoupler.

DA I may be, but it got a leak and thank God the old pan was water tight. The thing was old when I bought the house 14 yrs ago.

Where are you guys getting 40-50 bucks from?? You'll get 3-6 cents/lb for the scrap metal that an old water heater brings.

They are scrappers and if every other state is like Florida, the recycling companies pay cash on site by the pound and its tax free money. In other words they don't 1099 you if you bring in $1000 of crap. I doubt the water heater was worth more then $20 by the pound, I may be wrong.

Those guys drive around with the worst looking flat bed trailers you've ever seen just picking up any metal on the side of the road before the garbage truck arrives.

But I mean yeah they can make $100 for a load and like I said its cash money no taxes.

ETA: about 2 years ago I helped this old disabled guy sell his aluminum cans, I worked with him years ago out of college doing some social work. He's been selling cans forever. Anyway, he had 3 entire dump trailers full of aluminum cans. It ended up being over $800. Guy was like 82 and mentally disabled, and donated the entire thing to charity.

not a lot, like $4-$5 at most

i think scrap metal is around 25 cents a pound

but its like picking up aluminum cans, one has no real value but fill up a trailer full and you get $150-$200 for all your time and trouble

that still isnt much, but its something

lol no. You'll spend more money on gas driving to the scrap yard than what it's worth

I think I had heard you can make up to 70k tax free per year. I had a customer who made a damn good living selling cars to us. Catalytic converters are $$$.

Not much stainless in a water heater. At least not mine.

So much so that some a-hole stole the cats off my buddies new F-150 while he was parked at a boat launch. Remote started his truck when he was done hunting and got a terrible surprise.

No shite... My truck was the one beside his that was stolen as well. Crazy part is this isn't the first time I had one stolen from my vehicle.

there are some iranian looking dudes who ride around all day in a black van trying to buy up converters from mechanic shops. They are annoying as hell
