Finally got the go ahead for me to start shopping quotes for a pool build. In Baton Rouge, which companies are the most respected and would be the best to go with for an in ground pool and outdoor kitchen/bar area? I’ve never had a pool in my life so I know nothing about the companies. Thanks so much y’all

You’re going to need to get your ideas in order before they come out.

Heater/chiller?
Pool coping style and what flat work (walking surface around) will be needed if any.
Will you want a spa? Elevated or pool level. How you want the seating oriented as well,
Will you do a splash pad where you can put in-pool loungers and umbrella?
What about seating ledges?
Plaster color?

If you know the general size that’s great, but most companies will give you recommendations on all the above, but it’s a lot to process if you haven’t thought about it yet.

Most pool systems sre pretty idiot proof these days. We did a system with remote control that we set on a schedule. You can operate lights and jets as well.

Most of the big pool guys in Nola use the same company to do all excavations, plumbing and electrical. It’s a little strange, not sure if BR is like that.

Shop around and ask you neighbors if they have newer pools. I’ve seen some serious deals around Nola this past year.

Sign up and start reading the forums at Troublefreepools. Vast amounts of knowledge, especially for someone who has never had or built a pool like you or I. We built ours in ‘22 and have thoroughly enjoyed it. Their pool math app to test your own chemicals is very easy to do.

Pinnacle Exterior Construction
Russel Pools
Duplessis Builders
GW Oliver

Those are the ones I’d ask for quotes from. I’ve worked with PEC on several projects. They do great work

second the trouble free pools rec. Everything I have learned in the last 3 years since putting in a pool is that I should have put in a salt water generator. I still have about 50 lbs of chlorine so I'm not switching right now, but I probably will in the future.

I’ll sub it out for you- only charge you a set amount and the rest is what you pick out(coping, tile/brick, plaster, etc)

Did mine- total cost $28k. Gunite 16x32ish, “bean” shaped.

Had quotes of $50k-70k to do the same thing

Not hard - dig, pour, plumbing, tile work, finish plaster, decking.

Met with their estimator for my outdoor kitchen for 1.5 hours. Never received a quote.

They sprayed gunite for my neighbors pool in a thunderstorm. Collapsed on them, had to come back 2 days later and jack hammer it out and redo.

Scapes did my outdoor kitchen and I’m very pleased.

The suggestions can be endless. Start with the type of pool (fiberglass, liner, or gunite) and go from there.

Fiberglass - Least long term maintenance, chemistry is really stable, but fewer options on shape and size
Liner - more options on shape and size, but liner eventually goes out
Gunite - options on size and shape are nearly endless, but will have to recoat the concrete, and of the three, it needs the most attention on chemistry.

This.

All pool guys are out to scam you, especially the big name ones. Don't let Leslie's anywhere near your pool or a sample of pool water.

I got a quote from Pinnacle for my outdoor kitchen. I don't think they were doing any of the work themselves, subbing out everything.

I handled it myself for half the money.

In addition to the advice in this thread, here are a couple more:
- Break out your pricing when you get quotes. One pool builder may "include" something that others don't but they may be more expensive. Example: Company A includes 4 pool lights at $3000. Company B only includes 2 pool lights for $1200 but you can add more for $400 each. There many other examples which is why I recommend going line item by line item to find where the differences are.
- Have your general idea of what you want before you get quotes. It'll make your life easier than trying to decide what you want while the salesman is there. If you have the basic design and your needs, it makes it much better for you and the company
- Get multiple quotes. You may have to sub out pool and outdoor kitchen separately. The pool guy who also does outdoor kitchens may be more expensive than going with two separate companies.

All above is correct but all above is easily avoided by a set of drawings. Hire a designer to draw exactly what you want, money well spent. Then go get pricing to compare

These would also serve at the construction documents which as an owner, you will need to review and approve

just sold my construction company but you’ve given me an idea for a side hustle. Wonder if there’s a market for just drawings at a reasonable price? Like no PE liability…just drawings

When I’ve been around them, they’ve done a great job. Thanks for sharing your input though. Good to know.

Russell Pools
And GW Oliver probably two that have been around the longest.

These 2 right here. They will not be cheap but they will do the shite correctly, to spec, to code, and not cut corners. Lots of pool builders have come and gone in south Louisiana markets but these 2 have been around a long time and they are both genuinely concerned about their reputation. I've heard so many stories through my 2 decades in construction about pool builders disappearing and going out of business when their builds start to fall apart a year or 2 after they do them. Won't be the case with the above 2 - although they will likely be the 2 highest prices you get.
