My neighbor installs a pool in his backyard and he puts the pump right near the fence that borders my property line, and with a 3 inch pipe that literally drains into my backyard, behind my shed. See photo. I’m so inclined to immediately retaliate and divert the water back his way, but I’m uncertain whether he’s breaking a law or if I would be breaking a law if I do anything. I guess I will just go ask the guy what the hell was he thinking , but are there any pool owners out there that can tell me what he may have been thinking or what he should have done?

Can't.

You could try and approach him level headed like an adult first, it will probably get your farther.

Agree. One thing I’ve learned about my neighbors is that they are very cool, calm, and rational people if you just approach them like adults about potential problems. But when being passive aggressive, or just aggressive, about things, then it causes more problems.

Yes. Excellent advice.

agree, be an adult first. He may have not paid any attention to the contractor’s routing of the water pipes. Don’t assume he knows about the problem. Tell him about it first.

I would just go buy a cap and glue it on.

Wow that’s pretty amazing they just ran that under the fence.

If this was me I would start out rationale and call him or knock on the door, however you normally communicate, and say hey did you know your contractor did this? Come see.

Show him how it’s clearly over the property line and reiterate that it’s not cool then see what he says. If he’s a dick and says oh well deal with it then game on. I’d probably cut it at the line and pour concrete or something back there to cause it to back up

Thats insane, but quite possibly not something your neighbor personally did. They may not even be aware their installer did it.

I have one neighbor that never cuts his grass and never waters it. The other neighbor never waters and only cuts his grass after it rains (DFW area so we do go weeks sometimes without rain). I push all the water from my lawn onto theirs. However, if they took pride in their lawn I wouldn't do that.

Edited to say my neighbors know. I asked them. I got downvoted to hell.

What does the rest of your yard look like? Installer might have thought he was draining into the woods

That was definitely intentional, but most likely because the contractor was looking for a cheap out and your neighbor has no knowledge.

I would talk to the neighbor first and if that doesn't work cap and use plenty of pvc glue.

Also, if he doesn't do anything about it I would follow-up with code enforcement. It may not be breaking any laws, but it's definitely a code violation (couldn't imagine a State/county/parish where this isn't a violation). They will not only force him to bring it back to his side, but he will have to run a drain to properly run it off his property (and not onto someone else's)

Yeah, kinda need a satellite pic or something to really understand.

While he certainly shouldn’t have done it, I’m not sure what the large 3” pipe would be for. Maybe it’s just to divert the backwash from his filter, or it’s just a drain ran under his equipment slab to promote natural drainage that the slab cut off.

I was thinking the same way, except I'd make sure that concrete was shoved way up into that pipe so he has to cut a significant piece off.

No that’s unlikely. This is in a subdivision and it’s plainly obvious that there is a row of houses on the other side of the fence,

From his yard, can he visibly see the pipe exiting his fence and entering your property?

That is probably a backwash/waste line that should have been piped to the curb out front or tied into an existing drain pipe to the street.

I always vacuum to waste. That process puts out enough water with enough force to mess up your yard. Definitely approach your neighbor about this situation. They will probably be pissed off as well.

whoah... that goes beyond rational conversation with the neighbor. that's on purpose.

i'm very ok with him losing his shite on this.

ETA: obviously the contractor could have done this without his knowledge. we did a remodel last year and i told my neighbors beforehand to let me know if my contractors did anything that pissed them off.
