Have a 21 year old Trane 4 ton 10 SEER that needs replaced. Have a quote for a Carrier 4 Ton 17 SEER as a like replacement at $11,000. Seems high to me but Ive not looked at anything else yet. Looking for opinions about what to look at and if anybody has done something similar recently what it cost.

Does that price include ductwork replacement or just the unit?

No ductwork but the claim is that the existing ductwork is sufficient.

That quote is high as hell especially this time of year. Call around OP, set one morning and have 4-5 guys come by to quote you. Tell them all you are getting quotes. It only takes about 15 mins for someone to quote you, have one company come at 8am, one at 9am, one at 10am, etc.

I bet you get that down around $5,000 or less. This time of year you can probably find a company with overstocked units from the summer they never sold and someone that wants your business.

There’s a huge mark up on AC units. Your first quote was someone looking for a sucker. I bet if you call them back and tell them you got a quote for much lower they would drop it by $2,000-3000 and they’ll still be high.

Call Nick's Refrigeration. Nick is a Marine vet running a good, honest business and treats his customers well. He also won't try to gouge you.

My experience is the higher the SEER number, the pricier the unit up front.

But that is still out of line in my opinion. Like others have said, call around and get several quotes, but make sure to get references before opting for a company to install.

Proper installation is key to a unit working like it should and being trouble free.

That seems pretty high. Need to price compare at other companies as well. You need a duct work replacement plus furnace

Is it a single stage, two stage or multi-stage unit? With a 17 SEER quoted it sounds like it could be a 2-stage unit, possibly a multistage, HVAC. Those units are more expensive than single stage HVACs. Is your old unit a 4-ton? Have you done any energy efficiency improvements to your home (windows, insulation, air infiltration sealing) since the original HVAC was installed? Did the sales tech conduct a manual J on your house for HVAC sizing purposes? Is your current unit working, giving you more time to do some homework and get more estimates?

There are a few good multi-page threads in the H&G board from a few months back on the cost of replacement HVACs from posters with other helpful suggestions/tips. Here are a couple I bookmarked for future reference.

ETA: The quality of the installer/installing company and their follow up service and labor warranty is more important than the name/brand of the equipment. So focus on finding a great installer/service company as opposed to whether the unit is a Carrier/Bryant, Trane/American Standard, Rheem/Rudd, etc. Almost all HVAC manufacturers use the same component parts in their systems, with perhaps a few proprietary components manufactured by their specific company.

1200-1500 per ton is about the average going rate for replacement of system

tranes a good quality unit so $1500 per ton or $6k-$8k is about right.

DONT BUY CARRIER they are cheaply made trash

get a quote on another trane system or lennox followed by rheem/ruud system

carriers are barely one step above goodman and other "no name" brand cheap systems

my personal experience after 45 years in the business is 21 year old systems should be completely ripped out and everything replaced new. after all that time its time for it all to go and you are only talking about another $1500 to replace everything on average. the amount of mold mildew and dust mites growing in that ductwork and plenum box insulation is unimaginable to most people.

you can leave the ceiling boxes if they are the square insulated boxes and not the round flush mount flashing types, but replace everything else

Ok so now I’ve gotten some quotes and the best price is for a Rheem at about $6900 all inclusive. Not sure about Rheem quality. Thoughts?

I put in a new Gold American Standard 5 ton this year and it is worth every penny.

Living in Houston area, it get crazy humid and the new AC keeps the humidity at 40 % inside, very comfortable at 76 degrees when it is 100 outside.

Too high just for the equipment and no duct replacement. Get a couple more bids.

Also ask if there is savings if paid in cash.

Equipment doesn't matter. Installation is all that matters with HVAC. Even cheapo units can last 15 years trouble free when installed properly.

Was this company professional? Did they thoroughly inspect your existing situation? Quality of work is a focal point.

I just did two split system change outs for $10,500 if that gives you an idea of what you should be getting charged for a single system. Package unit should be cheaper.

I’m guessing this is a Carrier Infinity 17?

Those are multi stage and pretty expensive. That may not be that bad of a price. If not, it’s a bad price.

People always say this and I don’t get it for a replacement? Its basically just removing the old unit, hooking up the duct work, hooking up the copper lines, and you are done.

Sure you never want to go with a crappy installer, but how do you really know? Even the better bigger companies have new guys with limited experience.

Now on a new build certainly I can see the difference being huge.

Poor install will include unsealed duct connections, improperly sized or improperly matched equipment, poor welding or lineset work leading to continual garbage in the lines killing the compressor, etc.

Quality matters for any install.
