So what's an average cost for a complete new system? I'm talking outside condenser unit and inside air handler that's in the attic, plus new plenum, A/C pan, etc. Only thing not replaced is the duct work.

I’ll be interested in following this thread but I’ll start by sharing with some quotes I got last August from an authorized Trane dealer in BTR to replace a 14 year old 4-ton unit. Same company that installed my original unit when House was built in 93, and replaced the unit in 2005, and has done any service required in the interim, which as been minimal. I required 1 pound of R22 last July and the unit has cooled just fine but I obtained quotes just the same. Existing ductwork work is rigid and would be re-used and the existing line set would be re-used. Furnace is natural gas, 96,000 BTU. All quotes are Trane and condensing units are matched with evaporator coils. Includes new smart thermostats. So complete new system using existing ductwork and line-set.

14 Seer Single Stage, $8,300. 16 Seer Single Stage, $8,900. 18 Seer 2 Stage, $13,900 and 18 Seer Multi-Stage, $14,300. These quotes are from memory without pulling paperwork and model numbers, but they are close.

And I’ll also start by saying the quality of the installer is more important than the name/brand of the equipment. So spend more time finding a quality installer rather than than brand name on the equipment.

Wow that is crazy. Very similar replacement last year. Replaced a 18 year old American standard 4 ton with a 14 SEER Rheem packaged unit for 5750

Did the quotes include replacing the heater/furnace as well?

Yes replacement of everything, including furnace, except ductwork and line-set.

$1500-$2000 per ton (depending on brand and efficiency of the units) is a good rule of thumb average to replace it all but ductwork, thats the usual job situation.

the ductwork is only about another $1k on average

apples and oranges

package units are just like big oversized window units so they are cheaply made and there is a lot less that goes into making them, that is why they are a lot cheaper

I’m getting quotes to replace my 4 ton Trane. What’s your opinion on Amana?

I’ll certainly obtain more quotes from other reputable HVAC firms that carry different name brand before I make a decision on replacing my unit, but it seems from other threads on this board there can be dramatic differences in costs, even when comparing apples to apples and oranges to oranges.

I don’t mind paying a premium to insure a quality installation. You can go to HVAC-TALK forum and see the number of posters trying to get advice from HVAC professionals for major problems with brand new systems.

Had two units replaced last May. 2.5 tons and 4 tons.

19k and change for everything except ductwork.
These are Carrier 18 seer units with Aprilaire filters.

I probably could have negotiated a little less but he was willing to start the next day.

Thoroughly happy with them.

Recently did a 4 ton Daikin variable speed 16 Seer (efficient to 20+ Seer). Furnace included. Existing duct work good to go. Replace 20 yr old Carrier 2 speed heat pump.

12k

ETA: 12 yr parts and labor warranty.

Of course I’m not a HVAC professional but I do know Amana is made and owned by Goodman, and supposedly made in the same factory in TX. So Amana is Goodman, and Goodman is owned by Daikan. Those products usually come in at a lower price point than some of the better known brands - Trane, Carrier, Lennox, etc - but is my understanding Goodman HVACs have a good warranty.

There are those that speak poorly of Goodman HVAC products, but their component parts are for the most part are the same products used in other HVAC brands. I believe, from reading, that much of the poor reputation of Goodman is attributable to the fact they can bought by and installed by anyone, not just authorized dealers/installers, and thus the frequency of bad installs, and hence poor performance, is higher and this gives Goodman a poor reputation by many.

If the installer has a good reputation and reviews, and offers a good labor warranty that would be the most important factor.

Others can speak with better authority on this than me.

Can only give you my own experience. Just under $10,000 for single stage unit. Not sure tonnage off the top of my head. But average square footage. 1 story home. Same deal. Replaced everything but the ductwork. Lennox.

Original installation techs were obviously not experienced and didnt know what they were doing. I called with my concerns and the company sent a second 2 man crew. They confirmed my concerns and had to re-do a good bit of the work already done. Thank God I made the complaint. Havent had issues yet (3 years in).

Prominent company in Nola area. They made good on my concerns, but if I just trusted them with the first crew I'd be screwed.

Join the HVAC 2019 club.

Apparently my motherboard is fried, a few fuses blew, on a 20 year old system just found this week putting the A/C to use.

I'm in the "might as well replace the whole thing" camp at this so I'm upgrading to a 21 SEER Multi-Stage 3 Ton A/C, new Furnace 110k BTU from a really good installer for about $15k. I trust these guys as they have done 1 HVAC project (heater problem just as we bought the house), and 3 other projects prior to this in my house and always said ride that system as long as I could.

No Ductwork needed, but there will be new external runs and a new drain internally. I think that's it.

This is what I keep hearing. I did a lot of research over the last few days and pretty much every system gets glowing reviews....and terrible reviews. I'd assume the feel of it being a total crapshoot has to be due to human error more than anything else.

I went with Lennox XC21, fully aware of the parts issues though. They are recommended around here due to the need for efficiency both in cold winters and hot summers.
