Has anyone tried those small portable AC units?

I have a friend that has a bedroom that does not get enough cool air from the AC system… I believe his windows are painted shot, so he's looking at one of those portable AC units you see in ads. Just need to add water and plug into an outlet. Claims to cool a room for seven hours. Thoughts?

Evaporative coolers work well if the humidity in the room is low. I don't know what the cutoff would be, probably sub-50% humidity. With higher humidity they don't work so well.

Actual portable AC units need to run a hose to a window. They are basically less efficient/effective but more mobile window units.

ETA: Talks about evaporative coolers

Seems iffy. If it's not able to somehow exhaust the heat, not sure it would do much other than blow around humid air.

I would get one that removes water. Not adds to it.

Best bet would to be to get a tool to get those windows open and put in a window unit.

AC units work by moving heat from one area to another, they don’t just produce cold air, they have to be vented to the outside or another area by some method.

If you’re referring to one of those desktop AC boxes that all you need to do is add water, those are scams. There are a few videos on YouTube that tests and go into the science of why they don’t work.

have a company come out and adjust the vents, they have dampers in them to balance the air to each room, his must have come out of adjustment or never was adjusted properly

Doubtful this will work well at all. The physics just isn't there.

Where does the heat go? How do you transfer it out of the room? What about the heat you are adding through the moving parts/motor on the unit? That is adding heat to the room.

He should consider having someone assess his AC system to determine if anything can be done to better balance his system. Moving the vent, rebalancing the airflow through his ducts, etc.

That seems like a really unsafe situation.

You have to vent the hot air somewhere….out a window or into the attic.

As with all things AC, any is better than none.

Seriously, we sometimes use them in new construction houses, possibly the difference between passing out and being able to finish the day.

Absolutely had a neighbor die in a fire back in the 80s, bedroom windows would not open Found him laying below one of the windows, fire wasn’t that bad he died of smoke inhalation, house was repaired afterwards.

Evaporative coolers work very well in dry climates like out west in Colorado. However, they just make the house more miserable if the humidity is not low.

I see a fair number of properties these days use a hotel unit for difficult to zone control spaces. Works pretty darn well

Sounds like a swamp cooler. Probably works well at baseball games in the summer, but I don't see it working well in a house. Like others have said, those painted shut windows could be a safety issue. I'd recommend getting those un-stuck and either get a window unit or a room A/C with a vented line that goes out the window. We have one that has a water reservoir on it so I don't have to run a water line to drain the condensate...lasts about a week before I need to drain it. It gets real cold in August in our bedroom. Now...how energy efficient is it? I have no idea.

I own 2 of the "portable" units that have one hose that goes out a window, they will cool about 1/2 the space they recommend. So I think they will say they will do like 600sq ft each, and they really are only good for one room each.

They only have 1 hose, they make them with 2 hoses. One for fresh air in and one for hot air out.

As said already above, HVAC units don't cool air. They remove heat and then vent it outside. If you aren't venting the heat outside, then all you are really doing is circulating air. My 2 units will blow a lot of hot air outside, and still don't do a great job.

You probably mean “ductless mini split” systems. I use one to cool a attic room.

They don't work well in a south Louisiana climate.

If they do go for a real portable A/C if you want a good one you want a true dual hose inverter a/c. Midea makes a great one that is branded under a few brands, Costco has the best price. If you see a portable A/C that is like 14k btu but effective is 8k RUN. The good ones are like 14kbtu effective 12k.
