how about you?
i had thought that the hard freeze in january would have slowed them done some but they are out with a vengeance. i normally dont even notice the mounds out in the yard but this year they are in every pot, bed and planting area i have. if a large limb stays on the ground a week...ant pile. pile of leaves...ant pile. dog toy left in the yard...ant pile.
i got some bait stations that use a sugar water/boric acid bait that i'm hoping work in my gardens (no poisons allowed there), but i'm going nuclear everywhere else. what are y'all using to spot treat? my property is way to big to broadcast and i wouldnt do that anyway

I had more than usual so far this year. Just hit them with Bifen

Been in my house 3 years. Not one ant. During the drought last summer they invaded my backyard. Now they’re everywhere.

Over n out works great in my yard

Amdro has worked on all mine, both in La and Miss.

Amdro is what I went and got, of course it rained for two days after I applied it. shite is expensive though

The best stuff you can get (if you still can) is called top choice.
It’s expensive but it will rid your yard of fire ants for a long time.

The last thing I ever saw control fire ants effectively was Mirex….and it has been gone since the late ‘70s

I broadcast Over N Out twice a year. I haven’t had fire ants in my yard since. Been many years. My neighbors, however, are covered up with them. The stuff works!

For spot treating, go get some bifen or any product with 7.9% bifenthrin. Mix it 1 oz to 1 gallon of water in a pump sprayer and hose down the mounds. That should wreck their world. Here are a couple of links.

Yep, been using bifen granules the past 3 years solely on high areas in my yard. One application per year works for me. I apply it with a Scotts "walk-behind" spreader.

In early February, I had 16 mounds in the front yard and 14 in the back yard. It was ridiculous! I spot treated each mound with orthene. Then treated the yard with talstar and it’s been a month since I had any ants oh and by the way not a single mosquito bite during this time.

I use this stuff and have for years.
There are a few different makers, but all the same ingredient. It stinks to all hell, but does the job.
The trick with fire ants and spot treating is to stay on it. A big mound can have more than one queen. They won't feed all queens the same diet. If there is a large colony die off they will up and move. That's when you treat the new, small mound. I haven't had a serious fire ant problem in years.

Is CGrand really going to spray chemicals on his natural lawn?! Don’t kill the Ants!
Posted on 3/28/24 at 11:01 am to Tiger328
all ants must die
I’m not broadcasting that would be hosing down with chemicals which we’ve already established is a bad idea. Spot treatment is discriminatory
