My son plays linebacker in High school. He's been grinding hard his last 3 years weight lifting and agility training. He went from pudgy to damn near all muscle. The only problem is the more he works, the leaner he seems to get. He's not looking for huge bulk, but maybe like 20-25lbs of bulk would help. Pounds he has lost when he started pushing hard. So he's been asking about protein shakes, etc. We're from the middle of nowhere so it's not like the school has a huge nutrition program or anything other than a coach who understands weight lifting but not necessarily the nutrition part.

FWIW, I'm not asking for steroids or any sort of supplements that will turn his nuts into raisins or harm him. But, what else can he be taking to help see more improvement in bulking up more instead of leaning up? I know there is a lot out there but really it's foreign territory to me. Eating more doesn't work because he eats damn near everything. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not enough. Try something like Mass Gainer. Anything with a shite load of protein, carbs, and calories.

Eat more.

It’s not hard. Want to gain weight while gaining muscle? Lift and eat more food.

There are calculators to determine his calorie needs. Shoot for at least 150 grams of protein every day and then tell him to go ham on all other foods except for refined sugars.

If he’s as active as you say he is and needs to gain 20 pounds, have him eat 4000 calories a day. Bet he gains weight then.

Adding 25 pounds is considerable bulk depending on his age

Take this to the health and fitness board for better help

If you think he’s eating enough, eat more. I don’t want to hear he isn’t eating enough unless he’s sick of at the sight of food.

ETA: how much does he currently weigh?

No on creatine and no on mass gainers

Literally buy some MyProtein, add it with milk in a blender, two bananas, 1/4 almonds and a cup of oatmeal.

Close to 1,000 calories and 60g protein, keep eating what he eats.

It may not be complicated, but I can tell you from personal experience that eating more (healthily) is indeed hard

He has to have a caloric surplus. If he’s working out hard he probably needs to eat 3500-4500 calories per day to gain any weight at all
