Smashed fingernail - ride it out or go to doctor?

Last Friday I slammed my finger in the tailgate. Instant subungual hematoma. Pain not too bad unless I bump it, a little swelling that was improving by Sunday. Then Monday the swelling increased a lot around the base.
Still doesn’t really hurt and no real pressure. My understanding is that after 48 hours draining it isn’t very effective because it has coagulated. My only worry is infection.
Day 1:

For any that have experienced this, should I just ride it out or should I see a doctor at this point?
ETA: Any yellow coloration is just because I soaked it in iodine a couple days ago.

When I smashed mine a few year ago, the pain was unbearable. I heated a little 1/16" drill bit and burned a hole through the nail to relieve the pressure.
The blood came out and I had instant relief.
The nail fell off a few weeks later.

If mine was hurting I probably would have done the same. I’m kind of surprised it isn’t hurting more.
At this point I’m really just concerned about infection, especially since I’m diabetic. But I really don’t feel like spending hours at urgent care.

You are already dealing with compromised healing capacity with your diabetes. What is the apprehension against going to the MD office? I would call and schedule an appt or go to BROC after hours clinic if in the br area

Don’t have a primary doctor and I assume an urgent care means sitting there for a couple hours. I’m on the Northshore. Was just trying to avoid the aggravation if I got responses back like, “Yeah, mine looked like that for a week then subsided.”

A red-hot needle to bore a hole into the nail. A little pain but instant relief.

Red hot needle or hot small drill bit but for gods sake not in the drill lol. Dad had a coworker get that advice once and the guy tried to do it with a drill and it caught and drilled his finger.

Wait…you’re supposed to manage your diabetes? Frick.
I guess that’s why my A1C is 12.7.
My cardiologist reluctantly prescribes some baseline meds (that I sometimes take) as he yells at me to get a primary care doctor for the past couple years.

I hope you're being sarcastic about your A1C.
If you can get a needle (18 gauge works great), touch it to the base of the nail over the middle of the hematoma (blood) and slowly spin it. It will slowly bore a hole to the site and release the blood, and therefore the pressure. As soon as the blood starts to come out, stop the spinning.

Using a truck for truck purposes can be quite tricky. Better luck next year when you close the tailgate for the second time.

Do not know about Northshore, but here in DFW there are emergency clinics and ERs all over. They usually have you in a room in 15 or less. Could still take an hour or two of they do an x-ray for some reason. These usually have a higher co-pay
Many of the Urgent Cares let you book a time online now as well. It makes it go quicker.

get a needle.....heat it until its glowing red with a lighter and "drill" it through the nail to relieve the blood pushing on the nail. when blood starts coming out, go just a hair further to allow all the pressure to release.
i had one so bad one time on my toe nail, when the needle broke through, blood shot ~8' in the air

From my understanding, trephination has to be done in the first 24-48 hours - after that it’s too coagulated. This wasn’t really that bad the first couple days. It ballooned up on the 3rd day.

We had a teenager break a metacarpal Tuesday, and she got x-rayed and splinted in under an hour. The next day she got another round of x-rays and a nice pink cast in under 90 minutes at the ortho.

Being that you're diabetic and it looks like it is getting worse, I would see a Dr.
You are on the Northshore, in Mandeville there is a Pelican Urgent Care on 22 near the entrance Beau Chene that is pretty quick, and in Covington on Boston by Aquistapace is a place called Rapid Urgent Care.
