Anyone ever made significant gains in the calf department? What did the trick? Which exercises, techniques, frequency?

Put weight on your back and carry it for 4 or 5 miles. Every golf caddie I've ever seen has giant calves

Was about to recommend backpacking hiking trails for the same reason. Nothing works better than carrying weight on your back for miles imo. At the gym you can get away with the stairclimber machine and a weighted backpack.

and 100% of the excuse. Someone may have longer calves, higher calves, etc. But everyone uses is as an excuse to not train them hard.

Like some said, sled pulls will help, stairs, and swap up the calf raises. Standing, seated, etc. Do them more than you're doing them now. Most people put it 40 sets of chest and 3 sets of calves. Make them more of a priority if you want them to grow.

this. Also, probably more than any other muscle, they are already tough resilient guys. i find high weight high rep is the only thing they respond to. the last rep of my seated calf raises on every set make me bend over in pain. you have to punish them.

Every time I make an effort to really really train my claves, after about 3-4 weeks I inevitably strain one and have to rest it for a week or two. The workouts I do are very difficult with a strained or torn calf and I end up backing off the calf exercises to try and continue doing the HIIT and other cardio as much as I can. I like the aesthetic of good calves, but have come to grips with them not being quite where I would like.

Be careful with any targeted calve work. I do that once in college with heavy weights and it felt great. I couldn’t walk for a week.

I'm split on this.

My calves are enormous and always have been. In high school when people would ask me what I did I would just shrug. I lifted, but truth be told I usually skipped calf work. However, I would run 400s, 800s, bike 50+ miles, walk with weight, etc. when nobody else was. I do wonder if that helped at all.

Into adulthood I don't do much of the walking/running, but I bike a lot. My calves look just as good, if not better than they did back then. One of my buddies used to do calf work constantly and his legs are still extremely skinny. He can jump pretty high, but as far as looks, his legs look like any other guys on the street.

I lean toward genetics, but I don't know.

This plus the calf raises and tibialis raises.

No one has mentioned this, but I'd think doing double unders between weighted / strength work would be a good added stimulus.

I'd also recommend not overlooking soleus and tib work like a few have mentioned.
