Protein supplements vs Creatine

Mutually exclusive, or do people use both?

If have to pick one, which one and why?

Why NOT the other?

You can use both. I would suggest protein supplements because they come with other nutrients besides creatine. Creatine will help with body mass and muscle strength when used in higher intensity workouts/weight training.

I do a lot of distance running so I don't take creatine because it wouldn't benefit me as much to put money into that.

Not much real reason to avoid protein supplements, although you don’t have to have them if you eat enough high protein food. I’ve found creatine to be helpful with strength and with muscle recovery after workouts, just drink a ton of water or it will dehydrate you.

Protein supplement is only necessary if you are not hitting your daily protein intake.

I choose to eat my protein and not drink it so I would choose creatine. I also track so I know exactly what I am getting each day so no problems for me.

Obviously, if you are not hitting your daily macros, then protein for sure.

Protein powders/shakes are good for adding protein to make sure you hit your macro goals. I normally drink one in the morning before work and/or in the evening before bed, depending.

Creatine is probably the most studied supplement on the planet. Everyone should be taking it as creatine has health benefits well beyond helping with training.

I tell you creatine will make you hold onto some water weight. I started taking about 4 to 5g per day and I gained about 4lbs with no change to my diet.

Protein. That’s what builds muscle once you break down the muscle.
Creatine helps breaking down the muscle by sending ATP to it.

Maybe a stupidly obvious opinion but:

You can achieve your macro goals and protein intake "naturally" through diet without supplemental protein powder.

You cannot say the same for creatine.

Thus, creatine.


That being said, if for some reason you can NOT achieve your macro goals through your diet, then protein powder.

I ordered 160 servings of Creatine for $70. Creapure was the Creatine in it.

Protein is a macronutrient that your body uses for muscle growth and retention. You get this through a variety of foods or a protein supplement.

Creatine is an amino acid in your body. You can get creatine when you eat red meat, but if you're not eating a bunch, you probably won't get the benefit of it. Creatine's claim to fame is strength. It will get you stronger, but you need to be consistent with it. General use is 5g a day, everyday for the retention. You may notice some growth, as it forces more water into the muscle.

All in all, you can do both, as they really do different things. You need protein in general. If you're not getting enough through food, then yes, go ahead and get some whey. Don't use that as a lunch or breakfast, only as a "I need to get a little more protein in quick". Creatine isn't necessary, but it'll help. If you're not eating a ton of red meat, then get some of that too. Drink plently of water with it.

protein is 100% more important. dont consider it a supplement. its a building block.

I take creatine daily but only take protein supplement when I’m under my daily macro target with Whole food alone.

I'm older and my appetite has slacked off over the years so I drink a protein shake every day and add a scoop of creatine.

Pretty sure that is false. The most jacked guy I know hits his creatine goals by only eating red meat. Granted he eats a ton, but he gets his creatine.

Ever since starting the creatine, I’ve noticed that my hairline is retreating. Is this normal creatine bros? Here’s a pic of it.
