For those of your who do ultras, have any of you run the Rocky Racoon in Huntsville, TX?
I don't do ultras, but I used to run a lot of halves and a full. I was in a big running club in Houston and had a lot of friends who did Rocky Raccoon. Whoever mentioned the possibility of bad mud wasn't lying. A few years ago, there were parts of this course that were actually waded a bit. It's a real trail run with trails through the woods. You do have to really watch out for tree roots. They all say it's pretty. A lot of they don't do Rocky Raccoon over and over, even at shorts distances.
The one that's really popular with my friends is Brazos Bend. I think it's in Dec, but maybe they recently moved it. The trails are well maintained and there could not be a flatter course. It depends on what you are looking for. BTW, Brazos Bend has alligators.

The Brazos Bend gators…. No worries it’s cold so they are dormant and just sitting on the trail.
If you want to run a trail race there are soooo many better options than any of these. But most might have a few “hills”.

I keep wanting to buy one of those weight sleds. Does anyone know if they would benefit for running training,
Maybe if you’re looking to increase short distance running, like track up to 5k. Can’t imagine it’d help a ton for 10k and up.

I asked AI about it, and the answer it gave made sense. Functional strength can definitely impact endurance running, but not replace any of your cardio training. I might still consider adding it, and look for a used one on Facebook.
This is what it said:
Short Answer:
Yes, the Torque Fitness sled can help with endurance running (like half marathons and marathons), but not by directly improving aerobic endurance or pace. Instead, it helps by developing muscular strength, running economy, and injury resilience, which indirectly improve long-distance performance.
Here's how sled work helps endurance runners:
1. Improves Running Economy
Stronger glutes, hamstrings, and calves = more efficient stride.
Sled work trains those muscles in a way that translates to better energy transfer per step, especially when fatigued in the late miles.
2. Strengthens Posterior Chain Without Heavy Lifting
If you’re not lifting heavy weights regularly, sleds are a great way to build functional strength in a runner-specific way—without heavy barbell training.
This improves posture, stability, and form under fatigue.
3. Reduces Injury Risk
Sled work helps bulletproof the knees, hips, and ankles by strengthening supportive muscles and tendons.
Great for preventing IT band issues, runner’s knee, and hamstring strains.
4. Improves Hill Strength and Form
Mimics hill running: forward lean, drive through the foot, arm engagement.
Better climbing ability and more confidence on rolling courses.
5. Adds Variety Without Joint Load
Sled pushes/pulls are low-impact and safe during high-mileage weeks.
You can maintain intensity without additional pounding.
What it won’t do:
Increase your VO2 max, lactate threshold, or aerobic endurance directly.
Replace your long runs, tempo runs, or speed workouts.
Bottom Line:
The Torque sled won’t make you faster in a marathon by itself—but it makes you stronger, more durable, and more efficient, all of which help you maintain form and speed deeper into the race. Think of it as an endurance runner’s secret weapon for strength and resilience.

Could probably accomplish similar gains with other plyometric type exercises like box jumps or all out effort hill sprints. Maybe add a weighted vest too.

I don't mind hills, I plan to do the Grand Canyon Death March next year, and possibly the Pinhoti 100. I was just looking for something to do in the Winter / Early Spring. I might end up just doing the Chief Ladiga as a "keep up your fitness" type run early next year

If you didn’t know the north rim is closed and probably will be for some time. Hopefully back open by next year

Yeah, the Grand Canyon Lodge going up in flames has my Ultra Group a lot bummed as well (they do the Death March every single year on the last available weekend for the North Rim to be open... they are not thrilled about it being cancelled this year). They've been all posting pictures of them rubbing Brightly's nose for good luck. For now I'll be optimistic that it'll be open by the time I'm ready to do it next year. I don't need access to the North Rim either way, I plan to not use "North Rim Assistance" if I can pull it off anyways, but it would be nice for the option to be there.

After those shots Friday, ortho told me I should be good to go.
Rested and did myrtl all weekend, ran 4 at 10 min pace today at 1pm like an idiot, but aside from needing a cold shower, knee feels fine. To the point it is worrisome, I even did some squats when I got home just bc it seemed suspicious that I could bend my leg with no IT band pain. Going to take it easy for a few days and hope this 3 month saga is over.

1m @ 7:50
1m farlek at 11:47
Got a couple 5ks I’m gonna try to PR, speed work sucks after several months of just logging long slow miles.

Big fan of the weighted sled. Advise pushing it and pulling it backwards.

I want one to go up and down my street, like the Torque M1. But damn, they're so expensive, even used.

Hey Walt, what size are you in Saucony EP3? Pair I bought is up for grabs as I’ve declared the Adios Pro 3 my favorite. They are size 10.
Posted on 7/23/25 at 10:00 am to jordan21210
Ah damn, I’m a size 12.5. Thanks for thinking of me!

10-4.
Deal stands for anyone on here. I paid $45 for them, will let them go for the same to anyone on here. Otherwise will flip on eBay.
They are a size 10 but run small. I’m a 9.5 in Nike Vaporfly 2%/3 and a 9 in Adios Pro 3.

Ran last night. It’s hot. Pacing is a struggle. Humidity off the charts. Drank beer. Ate pizza.

if you are running by heart rate then right now would be TERRIBLE.
It's already bad enough just having to run in general in this heat, I would be completely miserable if I was trying to keep my HR below 145 right now (even though my run yesterday I did, but I wasn't TRYING to)
Posted on 7/23/25 at 2:10 pm to BaddestAndvari
Yeah HR goes out the window for me when it comes to summer. Which, if you've seen my other thread, could be why I'm fried right now
