Woke up at 4:30 on Saturday and ran 8 miles. Side note, any of you guys take Liquid IV after summer runs? I’ve given it a shot 3 consecutive weeks and have had horrendous diarrhea the next 1-2 days each time.

I’m just trying to get some electrolytes, I will switch back to Gatorade and throw the rest of that shite in the trash.

Last time I met with a dietitian, she gave me a fueling plan. Of course I never read it……. I’ll dig it up and post it here.

Anyone watch the US champs?
Ethan Strand makes the team in a 1500 PR
High schooler Cooper Lutkenhaus runs 1:42.27 in the 800 meters for 2nd place. If there was a lab that created the perfect 800 meter runner it’s this kid.

One of the best 800s I've ever watched. Super happy for Brazier, and Lutkenhaus is unreal

The "hey, I've run with that kid and his father!" obligatory post

Did 6 Miles today @9:00 to round out the week.

51 miles on the week, I seriously can't believe how many miles I've clocked this summer, it's unbelievable.

As for the post about liquid IV - I do something even more extreme with LMNT, it gave me bubble gut for the first few days I was taking it every day but appears to have gone down the last day or 2 (I started taking it last Monday). LMNT has given me GI issues during runs I believe, I hope by taking it every day it will relieve it, because I need it.

1.5 hrs @ 130HR walking stadiums with a 30 lb pack. I enjoy the low intensity cross training. I need to join a gym with a pool to incorporate some swimming into the cross training.

I’ll cross train again Monday. Takes me 45 mins to mow the yard. Add my 30 lb vest and it’s 125 HR.

I do a mix of the following after every run:
- Nutrabio Intrablast (BCAA/EAA/Hydration)
- Nutrabio Creatine Mono
- Vital Farms Collagen
- Nutrabio Supercarb (only after long runs)

I’m probably going to drop the BCAA/EAA in favor of a plain electrolyte mix since I drink a protein shake nearly everyday and eat meat…so extra BCAA/EAA is likely not necessary.

For my heart rate people:

Last Tuesday: 3 miles. HR167. Pace 10:20. Elevation 195. Avg temp 93.

Tonight: 3 miles. HR166. Pace 8:40. Elevation 215. Avg temp 81.

This is why I don’t run by pace. HR is a more effective measure of effort IMO.

I mean, I do the same thing, but in a different way

I did 4 miles sub 7 last week and had to rest between each mile.

I did 4 miles around 7 today and was able to do them without stopping.

My pace on my long runs is around 8:10 during the cooler months and 8:45 in the hotter months.

I run by relative effort though, not necessarily HR strictly. Doing it my way I've gone from:

21:23 5k to a 19:53 5k in a year and a half
48:05 10k to a 44:10 10k in a year and a half
1:46 half to a 1:35 half in a year and a half (though I believe I could actually get this much closer to 1:30 because my leg seized up at mile 8)

HR, Relative Effort, "zone 2" training works - but that being said I would never recommend it to a beginning, I feel like "zone 2" is not a great running methodology until you've been running awhile

Do you chalk that up to the temperature being cooler?

And how do you set out on these runs? As in, was last week meant to be slower and this week quicker? Or do you just start running and increase pace until you settle at a predetermined heart rate limit?

100%.

My tempo pace is 160-170 HR. Ramp up to that HR and hold it. Slower up hills. Faster down hills. Takes all the guess work out of it which is why I like it.

B.A. and Aubie would have a stroke if they saw my training

I don't check heart rate until after a run, and even then I don't take it into consideration too much unless it was really extreme. If I feel good but my HR is sitting at 170, that's just how it was that day. I think zone 2 is beneficial if it works for you, I just don't like being tied to a heart rate.

Same. I’d wager all of my paces are a tiny bit on the fast side vs what they should be. I just run by feel. I typically feel best between 8:50-9:20/mile and can hold avg HR around 135-145 for those runs, even in the heat.

So temperature was the only variable that differed b/w the two runs? Don’t think it’s that straightforward.

Race week for me and I’m not feeling confident. Bridger Ridge Run. 20 miles 6200’ gain and 8000’ loss.

If anyone is in the market for new gps watch, check out the Amazfit T-Rex 3 on Amazon. We got one and SO used it for crazy 100. Battery lasted 30hrs on full gps tracking utilizing gpx file. It’s seems to be as accurate as my coros apex pro 2. Display screen is super clear and way easier to see. For $200 it’s a steal!

Nah, I do relative effort because I have terrible HR drift. My average HR on Saturday for my long run was 151, and I was in the 160s for the last 8 miles and in the 170s for like the last 2.

I think there is a time and a place for worrying about that kind of stuff, but I also think it's over-prescribed to new runners, and even to runners who are not competing at the elite level for running.

I've been averaging 50 miles a week during my last two training cycles - that puts me in the top 10 in all of my running clubs on Strava, and I'm roughly HALF the mileage of someone who REALLY benefits from a pure 80/20 model zone 2 training (in my opinion)

That sounds fun and brutal all at the time time, good luck!

yea this is why I purely use “conversational pace” when describing it. That tells me more about your effort than heart rate. There’s too many other variables that play into it.

Haven't ran all week. Accepted a job offer as a net admin, hard start of July 3rd. Quit my job July 1st. Got a call on the 2nd that there was a delay with security clearance. Got the call this week it came in, but I'll now be working 11p-7a, which i told them up front i could not do due to having no one to watch my daughter. Old job has hired my replacement, so i am out of a job and mentally in a bad spot. Going to try to get some easy miles in today to break out of this funk.
