5 slow (9:49) miles on the treadmill this morning to avoid rain that never came.
I have a nice tempo run tomorrow:
2 miles easy (probably in a 9:54 range)
2 miles at 8:13
2 miles easy
Fingers crossed the rain stays away

Took your suggestion of the 800m repeats a little faster than goal 10k pace. Great workout—hopefully cooler weather next session

I say, I say, the humidity has returned.
i've been pretty good even in some warmer days north of Austin where i live, but i ran in San Antonio last night and that was a giant pile of sweaty balls.
one of my least favorite things about running when i travel for work is walking back into the hotel during happy hour and grabbing a beer while having that sweat where you looked like you peed yourself.

This happened to me Monday night. Ran around the neighborhood and didn't sweat much. Walked inside the house and started making dinner and it was like I sprung a leak! I was dripping in a couple of minutes and had to towel off.

Rain out today. I'll flip flop today's tempo run with tomorrow's rest day and be aight.

I'm going to start training for my first marathon next week and planning to use Hal Higdon's novice 1 program. Anyone have any insight on the plan and if it's a good one or should I look to something else?
background - this is will be my first marathon (rock'n roll on feb. 6). My goal is under 5 hours. Current 5k PR is 8:27/mile. I'm still very new to running. Anyone have general advice in preparing for my first marathon?
Also, on rain days when I'm forced to run on a treadmill should I compensate for the treadmill being easier by adding distance or incline?

millions of people have used Higdon's plans with success, so you should be fine
I used his intermediate plan for my first marathon and hit my goals

my personal update:
first run in 3 months for me today and it was a supposed "easy" 5k at 8:30 pace that was not as easy as I wanted it to be
I'm getting frustrated with the balance of strength and running, as I try to keep that balance of being able to run a 21 min 5k and also being able to clean and jerk 225# or squat 400#
seems like every time I start feeling really strong, I struggle with running, and when I go back to focusing on running, my strength struggles
its frustrating and I realize this is all vanity stuff, but my goal has always overall fitness and strength
anyways, that's my self pity for the day

My advice would be just be ok with running a bit slower.

7.5 miles tonight. Ran The Beast tonight for the first time in a long time. It’s a hill by the house that’s 530’ of climb over 1.5 miles. Tonight was the first time ever for me to run it the whole way without stopping (except two street crossings). 9:45/mile. Felt great and ran hard. Could have been faster at the end, but it got dark and sidewalks aren’t lit well.

If you’re running a 5K at 830 pace, you’ll run the marathon around 10 pace and get 430. 5 shouldn’t be a problem. Follow the plan and you’ll be great.
If you have to run on a treadmill just do the prescribed distance still. Maybe occasionally throughout give yourself a little incline but make it mirror your normal route.
The important thing is nutrition and hydration during your long runs. Mess around and figure out what’s best for you and then keep it consistent on race day.
Have fun!

Also how do I have the third most distance on the group this week (fourth if you count BRM). Y’all slacking.

I’ll finish with about 40
Tapering down for Chicago. Last “tough” run was this morning. Time to get the legs fresh and hope the weather cools off before race day

Nice six-mile tempo run this mernin':
1 - 9:52 (136 HR)
2 - 9:54 (145 HR)
3 - 8:03 (164 HR)
4 - 8:08 (170 HR)
5 - 9:54 (157 HR)
6 - 9:54 (156 HR)
Although it was humid, it wasn't as bad as the past few days.
I have 8 at a 9:39 pace tomorrow morning and then it's time for kegstands

Really feeling lucky with this taper and an 8pm kickoff tomorrow night. My "Long Run" on Sunday is only 90 mins which means I can easily sleep until 6 before I have to get moving. Beats the hell out of 4am and planning 20 mi.

Ah yes, that feeling when you're early for a race and have a porta-potty to yourself with no line.

Got 8 in at 9:37 pace despite sleeping like poopoo. Time for kegstands and (hopefully) an upset of the Tide.
