I've put in around 425 miles since Memorial Day. This summer has been very satisfactory. Endurance is really improving ahead of the marathon in December.

I have the Mercedes Half Marathon coming up in mid Feb. I need advice on a training plan. I run that distance routinely on my Sat runs, but I’d like to put in a decent time. My best 5K is 7:28/mile. Best 15K is 8:15/mile. I feel like I should be able to easily get to 8:00/mile on this. Would love to be sub 8 min.
No issues with training time. Currently running (4) days a week and cross training at least one day a week.

KS,
Ran an 8K race this weekend & finished with a 6:32/mi pace which I was happy with as I’m aiming for a 40 min 10K (6:25/mi) in mid November. Splits were 6:11, 6:18, 6:32, 6:52, 6:50, so I came out the gate a little too fast.
Any advice for me other than try to pace myself better next time? The last 2 miles were pretty tough

I had a good run this morning. My correct splits aren't showing up on Strava, so I figured I'd post them here.

Nice Race! you're getting real close to your goal. Did you go out a little hot, maybe but we're only talking 15 sec over goal pace so I wouldn't worry over that. if you blasted a 5:45 then its something to reel in. How hard were the first 3 and then how hard were the last 2? You still have another month to put it solid training and peak for mid nov race day. I see on strava you routinely run 2-3 race pace miles. start adding distance. Try Treadmill half mile repeats@ 6-6:15 pace with 1/4 mile recovery at 8min. by nov temps should also be 10+ cooler so that will help a little.
I know there were some pretty fast guys out for that race. Friend from BR ran 5:40 pace and was 5th.
BRM may be able to chime in with some hot tips since he's banging out 5:00 miles like candy.

Everyone will have varying opinions on this and it’s best to find what works for you.
I’m only able to run four days a week. I make sure three of them are effort runs. I count speed, tempo, and long runs as effort runs. The fourth run is a mid distance run at slow pace. My long runs at about 60 seconds slower than race pace.
The speed and tempo work is when I go all out and that’s where your gains are got. There’s plenty of good speed and tempo stuff on the web with various training programs. I think Hal’s incorporates it. I use the one from my running team. It’s been incredibly helpful in getting my pace up.

Thank you for all of this info! First 3 were good, last 2 were very tough I’d say. Hadn’t battled like that mentally on a run in quite some time (I guess since last in-person race in March?). I feel encouraged with my result, as I’ve only averaged ~15 mpw for the past 8-10 weeks with the tri training. Now time to up the mileage with Tri season ending.
I will start adding distance to those tempo runs like you said and am getting back to the interval work next week after my Tri this coming weekend. Appreciate your suggestion on the specific pacing with those repeats, can’t wait to try em out.
You are 100% right on the field. There were some real horses out there. Guy who won it set the course record at 4:51/mile

Too close to race time for higher mileage to make a difference so you'd be refining at this point.
1K (8-10) repeats at target pace with 60-90 seconds rest or 12x800 a little faster than target with 2 min rest for primary q sessions. The second workout of the week would be fast stuff to work on turnover. Think 14-18 30 second fartleks at mile pace with one minute rest, or 12-16 1min on, one off at 5K pace for the second Q session of the week. Doing both workouts (Longer intervals and the shorter fartleks) up until race week.
No taper for anything under a half marathon.

Hey, no problem and make it your own if you decide to give it a shot. I was basically describing it exactly how I'd do it. We all know that there is no one size fits all when it comes to training

4 miles tonight in the Xero sandals. Did hill repeats of sorts in that I sprinted the hills and jogged the downhills. 9min/mile pace and HR of 160. Felt real strong going up hill in the Xeros. Still getting used to them.

6.5 miles this AM 9:35/mile pace. Average HR of 155. 325' of climb. Easy pace after a hard day on Monday.

I’m starting to feel pretty good now that I am working in some tempo runs and long intervals. I’m not really doing any long runs, and instead am doing regular time trials/races instead, so we will see how that works out. I’m running about 5.5 hours a week, so hopefully that is enough for some fall 5ks.

Suffer fest this morning. Cut my tempo to 7 miles instead of 10; 14 miles total for the session. 20 degrees cooler where I'm moving. I'm done with this place
