I did long repeats again today. I am using McMillan’s pace calculator to determine my interval pace, which Mac describes as Tempo Interval Pace, but this pace, while sustainable, has my HR absolutely through the roof. My last mile repeat had me finishing at 195. I am hoping that when the temps drop this will change.

McMillan's estimates can be off by quite a bit if you don't currently have optimal fitness for the workout or race. For example, McMillan might predict your Marathon time as 3:30:00 based on a previous 5K of 21:00, but if you haven't been logging 50+ mile per week and 15+ mile longruns, you might finish closer to 4 hours.

Same goes for workouts. Longer repeats require adequate VO2Max and higher LT. If you haven't laid the foundation with several weeks of tempo runs and shorter, faster interval workouts, then you are going to struggle to maintain pace at target HR.

I don't know if this applies to you, but it's worth considering. The heat and humidity will play a factor, especially for longer runs/workouts, but that might not be the only reason for the higher than expected HR.

Idk if that applies to me. I have been running pretty consistently since March. I started the McMillan10k plan a few weeks ago. I used my most recent 10k time and my hoped for 10k time (which is a couple minutes faster) to calculate the paces.

A couple of minutes is a decent difference for a 10K. Are you using the predicted current pace or the goal pace?

It should and it will feel awesome. This heat lately has been pretty bad.

I’m not sure what it used.

The Tempo Interval pace it gave me came out to a range that was a littler faster than current estimated 10k pace.

How long y’all usually give your shoes? Thinking about retiring my Brooks Launch after about 350 miles. They are feeling pretty flat.

I usually get to 250 on a pair before I get bored with them and want something new. Or just when I start getting more aches than usual.

Kept my last ones way too long. Probably about 600 miles.

Usually between 3-400 for me. I firmly believe it's warranted on some and purely mental on others.

I went over 400 miles in my last pair of Brooks before getting refitted. I try to remember around 300 miles to start looking.

I decided a few weeks ago that I was gonna hit the treadmill more often that usual (which is never) due to the heat. Had to tap out this Summer, as I will usually power through it. That said, I'm kinda getting used to it and getting accustomed. All that said, I'm sitting here debating to myself if I want to do intervals at 3:30 this afternoon on the road or treadmill in 102 feels like. I may end up at the local High School track (which would be my preference, just not sure how all of that is working with school back in).

I believe the suggested training paces are based on your goal time.

For intervals of what length?

I put 1200 miles on my last pair of Altras and 1000 on the pair before that, but the bottoms of my shoes wear down pretty evenly. I don't notice more primitive shoes getting flat in comparison to the ones I used to run in.

Ran intervals at a local track yesterday. It was 90 degrees with a 102 degree feels like temperature. It was hot and about half way through I had to start walking my 200 m recoveries. I prefer being outside and couldn’t imagine trying that workout inside on a treadmill. I would’ve have never finished that workout if I wasn’t at the track.

I actually find interval workouts more tolerable on the treadmill than long runs. The variation in pace breaks up the monotony.

around 350-400 or when I start having an unusual ache. Which ever happens first.

Then I try to get a little more miles with them on trails. I still haven't found a trail shoe I'm enamored with.

That's actually what a smart person should be doing.

But I've never been accused of being the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Your probation doesn't prohibit this?

I just took a pair of Boston 6 to the 500 mark, although I long ago stop using them for anything but shorter, moderate pace runs. I could probably take another 100 miles before the rubber wore through.
