Well one of the guys took off at a fast pace and I wasn’t just going to let him go off on his own.

So yeah...the slow 3 miles turned into a solid effort because my pride wouldn’t allow it.

I just picture Chris Trager from Parks and Rec saying this and then sprinting off.

Anyway, did 4 miles today after work at 8:30 pace. I'm in Dallas this week for work and I just have to say, I don't know how you Texas and Louisiana guys do it with the humidity. Screw that, give me my 108 degrees at 8pm over this . Hahah

I've been lurking on this thread for a while now and am ready to join in. I am training for my first half marathon and joined a training team to get me in prepared. Currently I completed my second week and 42 total miles. I'm not a fast runner nor have I been running for a long time but I enjoy the benefits and I am competitive so I always want to improve. I'll check in on this thread from time to time because I do find it motivating.

I do a beer run periodically at a local brewery. A pretty decent runner I knew took off at a good clip and I was all like “cool, I’ll stick with him.”

22 minutes later I set a 5k PR. Then he and I drank beer for 2 hours.

6 miles easy Sunday, 3 on Monday at 9:00 pace. Rested Yesterdaysince I had to pull a long night at work. Got home at 2 am, couldn't sleep, ran at 3 miles at 6. At the chiro cuz the Achilles pain is back .

Ran Monday in lower drop shoes and probably started off a little too faster running in them for the first time in months. At least I know this is manageable.

You guys got me amped go out and run a fast 5K. My fastest 5K (22:58) this season came in a 7 mile run. I would hang my head in pride if run it under 22:00.

Current PR is 22:22, but my goal is sub 20. I feel like I can get there with a solid couple months of training and running consistently.

This morning I did some intervals. 4x800m with a 2 min rest in between each. Tried to do each in 3:10 which would be a sub 20 5k pace (about 6:25).
1 - 3:12 (6:26 pace)
2 - 3:14 (6:32 pace)
3 - 3:18 (6:40 pace)
4 - 3:14 (6:31 pace)

My pace chart for every single one is just a steady decline. I have no clue how I can keep that up for 3 miles

I've got a weird, slightly painful feeling in the top part of my right hip. Like on top of my quad. Decided to skip my 6 miler today and only do an easy 3. Wednesdays are really my hardest run of the week - lots of steep, long hills some of which hit 300 feet of elevation gain. I'm hoping I can get a good night sleep and feel rested to tackle the 6 miler tomorrow.

It was nice this morning though. 68 degrees and only slightly miserably humid.

Man, you guys really know how to make a guy feel slow. Good work in here.

Decent training this week so far here:

Monday - 1/2 mile warmup, 3.5 mile progression (9:13, 8:59, 8:52), 1/2 mile cool down, followed by some gym work.

Tuesday - Gym work in the am. Did some farklets in my neighborhood in the afternoon: 5:00 warm up, 10 x 1:00 sprint, :30 jog, 5:00 cool down. These were brutal. 108 feels like temp outside. Much slower than I expected, sprint speeds ranged from 7:15 - 7:37, which would be an easy pace for most of y'all. Ha!

Tentatively planning to run the Twilight Classic 5K Saturday evening in BR. I'd definitely be in if it were a morning race, but not quite sure if a 7 pm race will be in the cards. If I can be around 25:00, I'd be stoked.

That sucks. Summertime cold? Those are the worst.

Any of you guys use a roller for recovery? Worth the buy?

I know this has been covered in other threads, but I wanted to get responses from other runners. TIA.

I can't remember if I posted this earlier in the thread, but I'm having a really hard time with replacing my shoes. I've been stuck on this for about a month now.

I've worn the same pair of shoes (ASICS GT-2000 5s) since I started running last year. They're the first pair of shoes that have worked for me and I've had a lot of discomfort in years past when trying and failing to get into running.

They've discontinued the 5s and have updated to the 6s, and the 6s are getting really bad reviews.

Any advice for getting a new pair? I don't have the money to try a bunch of different kinds. I've tried in the past to let shoe stores test my feet and strides and then suggest a shoe for me, but they've always been terrible.

I'm way overdue for new shoes, and I'm wondering if my hip pain has something to do with it.

I usually incorporate some rolling into my post run stretching, time permitting. Dealing with a knot on my right shin right now, so I've been focusing on that area and my calves. Pretty painful at times, but it's one of those hurts so good type of things. That said, I have no idea if it works or not, haha. I find ice helps more with my particular ailment.

RunPeat

I wouldn't buy solely based on the reviews, but this website provides a good start. At a minimum, it does a great job of noting if particular shoes run small or large.

On a personal note, I recently added a pair of ASICS to my closet for the first time in over 10 years. I bought the Dynaflyte 3 for my short to mid-distance runs. I was never able to fully settle into the their gel shoes. These have worked very well for me to this point. However, I'm only 50 miles in on them so I'm not sure how they will wear. Wear patterns and trends is what separates a good pair of running shoes from a bad pair. Most feel good to great out of the box. How they feel after 100+ miles is the key.

I've never felt comfortable in a pair of Asics, so I probably am not the best to answer. I am currently enjoying the Ghost 11 from Brooks and just recently picked up a pair of Adidas Solarboost. Fairly similar weight/drop, although the Adidas feels lighter and more cushy. That said, not sure what advice can be given other than to go try a few on and see what works for you. I really like the Altra Escalante as a zero drop, will probably be my next pair and see how they work out.

Anybody ever run in a pair of Sketchers? I glance at RunPeat from time to time and they currently have a $35 pair of Sketchers as their #2.
