Yesterday’s humidity in Baton Rouge got the better of me. Did 14.5 (2 mile WU at 7:30, then 4x 2mile@6:45, 1mile@8:00, finish with a 1/2 mile@6:45). HR was a little high, but made sure to spend rest of the day recovering! I much prefer that 40-50 degree range!

That sounds like a tough workout, nice times

Trail running is my real passion. I do road miles so I have a base to do trails on the weekends and races (which I didn’t do any of last year.)

Obviously it’s a different style of running, but I feel very spastic a lot of time and grunt a lot. Lot of drops, jumps, climb, and cutting. My arms are all over the place. It’s not as sustainable as every day road running because of the joint and impact issues it creates. I was beat AF when I got back to the car.

I will say I’m super thrilled with my Cascadias after 2 really rough runs the last 2 weeks. Carbon rock plate makes a big difference

I made this switch from street races to mostly trails this year. Did a 50k Trail relay last weekend and just signed up for a full 50k in September. I’ll sprinkle some shorter races throughout the year. I am hooked

It’s addictive.

I just pulled the trigger on a trail half marathon in San Angelo in March. I think sheaux said he was doing that as well. Based on today’s run I’m contemplating trying to get that under 2 hours. 300 feet elevation in the whole race is very doable. I just haven’t trained one iota for a half. I just try to keep my base up and have at least a 7 mile run a week to keep the mileage up.

Might do a 50k in April if the stars align but I think my boys will be in full swing of sports I don’t schedule races if they have anything going on (which was every weekend last year it felt like.)

Today was an easy 6. I didn't get a chance to run over the weekend with a bunch of daughter events. Legs felt great. Maybe because they were rested.

Here's my take on Lance A. I've followed him from the beginning. A guy who doesn't know his real dad, his step dad that gave him the Armstrong name treated him like shite, so yeah, dude is going to have a pretty big chip, FTW attitude. To me the shitty thing he did was try and destroy the people wanting to tell the truth. I don't think people give one shite about the doping part.

Is he reformed or nice now? He's a little better now that's he had to show a little humility. I think he's just trying to move past all that past crap and hit reset.

I did a half marathon trail run near Muir Woods outside San Francisco a couple of years ago while there for a convention, that is still my favorite race I've run. I was staying in SF and had to pay $75 for a 5am Uber that was one of the scariest rides of my life, as the driver wordlessly and recklessly navigated fog covered hills, dropping me off in a damp, cold field. The race ran through woods, down near the beach and then up mountains with breathtaking views of the Pacific. Afterwards there was no reception to call Uber and no one would give me a ride back to SF, so I hiked up to the Muir Woods entrance and called a cab from a landline. Another $100 and I was back in SF before my wife got out of bed.

Was sick all last week so didn't get to run much. Saturday morning I went for an easy effort 10k @ 8:29 avg pace.
Hopefully this weather clears some this week so I can get some speed work in finally

Let's talk about Garmin Connect.

Time 1:06 with a moving time of 1:03? I didn't stop once. Avg pace 8:11; moving pace 7:53 (I didn't stop running).

I never understood how this happens. Sounds dumb, but I assumed that it was caused by those times during a run in which I wasn't swinging my arm. If I stop to piss or take a swig of water, it throws my pace way out.

Elevation is always wrong.

A guy in our Strava group runs a couple of the same routes I do. I'll show 0 to 5 ft of elevation gain (pretty accurate), while he has 1k+ ft (not accurate). Interested to know what device he uses.

I’m going to do a few trail runs just to change things up and give my legs a break from the asphalt. Probably try to do a few trails a week until I start training for Tupelo in May.

I don’t know what to think with elevation because of the same thing. Most of my group uses garmin but the crew as a whole has polars, garmins, suuntos, and people that use their phones.

We can all run the same route and come away with 100 foot variations in our elevation.

Heck. Last week in Vegas I ran with a guy and we stayed side by side for 5 miles. We booked it across the bellagio fountains to finish and I finished a good 5 seconds ahead of him. When we looked at results he had a 10 second faster pace.

It’s quite literally, not rocket science.

I enjoy it,too. Especially in the summer, when running out in the hot streets is nearly impossible. But, I find it hard to to go fast enough. I always have the fear of tripping over roots, rocks, etc .
I take so many short steps, I'll lose a lot of time.

I'm waaay too scared of snakes to do trails. In high school we never really thought about it and would run through anything. But rolling up on a rattlesnake at Tunica and moccasins on trails around the house turned that around quick.

that coral snake was a beautiful little effer. wouldn't get off the trail though.

Just finished my first half (austin half marathon) in 2:05, which is ok I suppose. I didn’t really train other than running a 10k last weekend. There was some brutal uphill that slows you down but overall it wasn’t too bad from a cardio standpoint at all, but my legs wanted to break off. The worst part though was forgetting headphones in the car. Thanks to those who gave me advice .

Congrats!

I did Austin as well, but have been dealing with a hip injury so just paced my girlfriend who was running the full for the first half.

That is a very dificult first half marathon. I live in Arlington VA which is nothing but hills and Austin was very comparable. I thought the section in north austin with the sort ups and downs was significantly tougher than the long grind up Congress

Getting a free vo2 max test next week. They are going to prick my finger during the run so I’m not looking forward to that...but fascinated to see what the results are.

Shamefully did my first run in over 3 weeks. Humid, pushing my 25 lb toddler in a stroller, got in what felt like 2 decent miles to get the lungs and blood pumping again. Don't know if the half marathon will happen or not. The closer it gets, the more iffy I feel.

When is your race again? You put in a 10 mile several weeks back didn't you? Get some more runs in like you did today and you should be able to finish without much problems.
