When is your race again?

Race is March 9. I did 10 miles about a month ago. I'm going to try to get a longer run in Saturday morning for sure. We'll see what happens.

With a race date only two weeks away, I would just make sure you don't overstrain yourself. I would aim to add a half mile or so to each run until you get 4 days out or so. Then just a couple of shorter runs leading up to race days. Some of the more knowledgeable guys here may tell you something different. If so, listen to them instead.

I'm very new to running, along with my neighbor, and we are stumped about the pace for The Woodlands Half next Saturday.

Our longest fast run was 6 miles @ 9:03.

Our longest training run was 13 miles @ 10:27.

Our goal is to beat our LaPorte Bridge Half time of 2:15. Can we run with the 2:00:00 pace group? Should we stick with the 2:10:00 group? When we run in our neighborhood it is so inconsistent with pace because we are still learning.

You can run with the 2:00 group but don’t stick with them out of the gate. They’ll be good to pace you after the first few miles.

Thanks for the response and I'll show my ignorance here while taking your advice.

Not out the gate --> Does this mean we should run faster for the first few, then slow and run with the group or the opposite & start slow then catch them ?

I would say the general recommendation is to start slow and try to build from there. You will likely have a lot of people in the way the first mile anyway that will slow the pace until it strings out a bit. You could “start” with the 2:10 group and then if you’re feeling smooth start picking off runners and moving up.

That was probably a better way to put it.

Don’t try to win the first mile at all.

Based on the times you listed, and the fact that you've never raced before, I would say 2:10:00 would be a good time and a nice accomplishment. At that time, you would have cut 30 seconds a mile off your previous longest run. Keep us posted as to how you do.

How common is it to have a pretty sore foot after a half marathon? The edge of my right foot is pretty damn sore when I walk, but not to the touch. No visible bruising or swelling. But it oscillates between being outright painful to walk on and just kind of nagging me. One day it didn't bother me at all until the evening when I was limping around on it.Obviously if it keeps it up I'll see a doctor, but I plan on skiing next weekend so I'm hopeful it's some sort of inflammation that will subside soon. Thanks all.

Went to see the Ole Ortho today. Come to find out this guy isn't an actual surgeon, he specializes in non invasive type of stuff, so he wasn't all that much help.

We did some different movements and he was complementary of the muscles/tendons surrounding the Vastus Lateralis which is obviously ruptured from looking at it. He had me take some X-Rays and referred me to an Ortho surgeon, who would be more helpful in deciphering the X-Rays and my old MRI (and determine a need for a new MRI). Have an appointment with him for sometime in April.

Good news is he said based on what he sees and the care I take of my body, that there is no need to change anything that I'm doing for now.

So of course I followed up with a 40 minute tempo run, in the sweltering February heat, that is. frickin' felt like July out there.

Had the same issue after a full two weeks ago. Took about a week and a half to go away.

I’ve never gone over 8 or so miles without some foot pain afterwards. Definitely never ran a half without hurting some.

That’s just me. I did 9 miles trails this week and was pretty tender all day. Then I apparently had a foot cramp and screamed bloody murder in the middle of the night and fell back asleep

Ended up doing 4 miles today... In 80 degree weather... With moderate humidity. Rough.

I can't believe i just discovered this thread!

I ran 10 yesterday in hill trails, and it was about 29 degrees. I usually run before 6:00 on weekdays, but it is dark and cold where I live so it sucks. I have no choice with my schedule.

I will be working the next month in a warmer climate (and beautiful terrain) and am really looking forward it. But come April I'm moving to a hot urban area, so am nervous about my workouts.

nope. I really love eating and drinking, so I'm training for my next meal! It is also the only time I have with no one else asking for something. It's head-clearing time. I've run a few marathons (NY and Berlin), but my last one was in 2017.

yeah. But I am moving to Hong Kong in April for a new job. I may try to run the HK marathon while I'm there.

Welcome Spirit.

I saw Walmsley had some fun runs in HK this week. Looks like a cool place.

I want to submit to the board the worst running experiences imaginable.

Jackalope Jam outside of Bellville, TX. Half mile out. Half mile back. Gravel path. 3 days.
