So this week I am turning 37 and we held my little boys birthday party yesterday at the local batting cages.

I decided I would get in and hit and worked my way up to the 70mph setting which is really 85mph according to the owner.

As I sit her this morning reflecting back, I realized I can hit as well if not better than I could 20 years ago in high school. That is with only hitting once maybe twice in those 20 years. It is amazing what a simple effective strength program can do for you.

I am not really sore(other than biceps which is weird) this morning or hurting at all, even after hitting 100+ balls. I was not out of breath, even when running around playing Dodge ball with all of the kids.

The other dad's who tried to hit(except my best friend who played pro ball) struggled to hit the 40 and 50 mph balls. They were literally huffing and puffing each time after exiting the cage. They don't even have the energy to get in the cage and play dodgeball.

I say all this in the hopes that when you start questioning yourself on why you are doing this, you have something to reflect on.

Sure most of us want to look better naked and sometimes we start questioning the programming and why we do the things we do. Understand that most of us are always going to have these questions and want to look better, but the most important things in life is being able to get out there with your kids and grandkids and actually enjoy playing with them.

Try and keep that in mind next time the workout calls for burpees or sled sprints or some other miserable thing that we honestly don't want to do, but know deep down it will make us better.

Get out there and do hard work gentlemen, do the things others avoid, enjoy the process and live life to the fullest, we only get one to live.

Man it's amazing the excuses I hear from the other Father's in the group. Most of the time it is simply fear or laziness that stops them from doing the things necessary to feel better and perform better. Don't let that happen to you.

Also I wanted to say, when in the gym, focus on performance. We won't all make gains in everything in a linear pattern. Just focus on getting better over long periods of time.

It's not a secret on here that I'm a huge Brian Alsruhe fan.

He's adopted the RATM lyrics "what better place than here, what better time than now" for a shirt. It's perfect for working out, especially for me having turned 38 last month.

Wherever I am, the time is now to go get **** done. Am I capable of what I was at 25? Let's find out. Maybe I'm capable of more.

Just throwing yourself in and enjoying the journey is awesome.

Father of 2, get up @ 2:30AM to lug my 40 year old arse to the gym 6 days a week. It's an excuse for sure

This is the whole reason for me working out. My boy was 4 and it was time to go play with him outside in August. I ran around like 15 minutes and could not go anymore. I came inside and my wife said something like "too hot??",. and I told her it was way hot, but I was coming in because I COULDNT run with him and play.

The next morning I walked into the crossfit down the road. 6 years later and about 1200 workouts I can tell you that yesterday AFTER baseball practice I came home and played ball in the back yard, practiced soccer and just enjoyed my kids.

I turned 50 two weeks ago. I wish I would drop 40 lbs, but until then I will keep working out and keep try ing to keep up.

I withhold comment on the 85 mph machine.

Similar story here - I recently went on vacation in Vermont and went on a short hike - about .5 miles - and while most of the people were not obese or even very overweight they clearly didn't do much working out. Going up the hills, I was huffing a bit but not dying. Ahead of the whole lot of them. I'm still 40ish pounds overweight and outhilling all of these smaller people.. i thought "thanks Crossfit!"

So you had time to reflect in between chugging Monster Energy Drinks and punching holes in the Sheet Rock?

Recently did a footrace with my 13 year old and still smoked that little turd. And he ain’t slow.

Just knowing I can pick up and do anything with them they want to do is an incredibly good feeling. My dad has always been heavy but could at least throw the baseball with me but by the time he was 40 he couldn’t even go on an extended walk. After retirement he just DGAF and eats whatever he wants and can’t do anything with my kids. My FiL is a farmer and still in great shape at 75 and can keep up with the kids.

They do kick my arse at Fortnite though.

I agree with your post. I also keep in shape to keep my stomach flat. I need my pecker to look as big as possible.

Happy birthday to you brother! You've helped a lot of people here and impacted so many of our lives for the better - just because it's through a computer screen doesn't make your contributions any less meaningful.

I've said before in another thread that the most inspiring people to me are the seniors in the gym still getting in there and kicking arse. Those are the people I want to be instead of some decrepit creature who lives in constant pain for the last 20 years of my life. Do you guys realize how much nursing home pussy we're going to get when we're in our 70s and 80s?

My mom was a junior Olympic swimmer in her youth and got up to swim every morning super early before work. One time we were on vacation, I was 16 so she would have been in her early 50s. I challenged her to a race from one end of the pool to another. I won handily. She said, "let's go again and I'll actually try this time." I thought she was just talking trash but sure enough that old bat proceeded to embarrass the shite out of me in front every single person by the pool that day. Straight up pulled a Michael Phelps on my arse. This was about a year after she had been diagnosed with cancer too, just an absolute machine. But it set a tremendous example for me and that's something you parents gotta keep in mind - your kids are sponges, they are always watching and listening to every little thing you do. Do you want your kid to say, "yeah my fat old man just sits in his recliner and drinks beer all weekend" or do you want him to think you're a real life superhero?

You're in this for all the right reasons lsu777, thank you a thousand-fold for educating and inspiring us all. Progress is never a straight line, set backs are gonna happen to ALL of us at some point or another. Just keep showing up every day and putting in the work, good things will inevitably follow.
