Solid post. I turn 48 in a few months. Despite an ever increasing amount of injuries that seem to pile up more frequently, I still get on the mat and train BJJ. There are times I wonder why I do it because rolling with 20 year old white belts isn’t getting any easier, then I wonder what else would I be doing, being a lazy overweight middle aged bum?

Great post LSU777
I'm just a few months past 65 and I've never felt better in my life. I do 5-3-1 and HIIT and eat keto. Lost 43# so far and reversed my Type 2. I'm going to be able to stay active no matter what my age.
You've always been generous with your knowledge and I thank you for that.

Thanks bud.. turned 33 last week. I quit smoking and started lifting again when my daughter was born 2 years ago for the very reasons you described. I can already see people falling off health wise at my age.
I get my cardio in the form of impromptu dance parties these days. Feeling pretty good.

I’m 42 next week and it pains me to see so many dudes mystery or even younger so lazy and out of shape. More times than not I dread working out and I hate waking up so damn sore but it’s so worth it at the end of the day.
I just returned from Colorado where I did 92 miles and 14 summits in nine days. Coworkers keep asking how I do it..the answers are simple.
I workout consistently, maintain a proper diet, and I don’t fricking give up.
I dont see why it’s so hard.

lsu77, you still thinking about going for PN1?
I have decided that I'm going to. I want to start coaching nutrition on the side.
Also, NASM has a nutrition cert program now as well. Id like to eventually get PN1, PN2, and the NASM cert.

This is why I do what I do. I refuse to let myself whither away.

That's awesome. Coaching kids must be fun.
I want to help other people see the light when it comes to weight loss - I want to help fight obesity on the ground. So much bullshite and nonsense out there. Thyroid 'fixes' for people without thyroid problems. Marketing gimmicks and people worrying about growth hormone or autophagy when none of that really means much when you're 50+ pounds overweight. I feel like my history and background will help me relate and empathize with people who are struggling just like I have.
I bet with nutritional and exercise coaching you can help a lot of youth get into great shape and achieve their dreams. That's gotta be exciting.

Well this is a hobby for me and I do coach in the local leagues, but I don't coach any kids in weight training. I will coach my 3 boys and prolly my nephew's and possibly my God child.
My oldest is doing football and practicing with his baseball team. So between that and hitting lessons he is getting everything he needs from a cardio standpoint. I do have him do pushups, squats and situps nightly and in the morning. Not much 10-20 total as he is only 8 right now.
My middle that turns 7 this week is my athlete, but he is doing conditioning with his baseball team right now twice a week. We will start Sunday nights doing pushups, ring rows, sled pushes and carries.
Once in season starts both will cut back to 2 strength training sessions a week.
Also about to start the BFS dot drill nightly.
Training kids is awesome especially when they are yours.

One of the things that got me back in the gym after a break of over 20 years, was my attempt to run to first base in daddy vs kids baseball. It was a controlled fall all the way to the bag and it was a miracle I did not face plant. I was sore for two days. 52 and feel like 38.

I’m one of the younger guys here but that was really inspirational. I’m going to turn 30 in a few months and I’ve noticed people mentioning that once you turn 30 their bodies started falling apart. What’s funny is that i’ve Spent the last decade working out consistently and I feel just as good as when I turned 20 and don’t see any signs of that changing
I look at some of my friends and I see the obesity and lack of fitness creeping in and I’m worried about them. I can see heart disease and diabetes in their futures if they don’t change things.
And while I think my goals will shift soon from strength oriented to triathlon and running. I gotta remember that it’ll all be worth it when I can still play hoops outside with the kids in a few years or play two hand touch on the grass with the little ones down the road.

I agree with pretty much everything in the OP and it's great that most are focusing on the primary message about kids/grandkids but I kept thinking/hearing...
When I was in high school, Van Morrison's 'Wild Night' remake had the lyrics 'All the girls walk by, dressed up for each other'. My girlfriend at the time explained to me that most girls are more interested in impressing their friends than guys. I didn't believe her at first but eventually understood.
When I was reading the OP and responses, I realized that most guys start to do this also as we get older. It's not as much about attracting the females as it is about comparing ourselves to other guys. I think that I probably do also, although would never admit it. No I didn't just admit it.

I'd say you're at least partially right. The only girl I really care about impressing is my daughter these days, I want her memory of me growing up to be actively involved and of a specific image. I was never like this before, I played music, drank a lot, smoked, dressed however...
As far as other guys, you're right, though it's not as competitive as the hormonal teen years. I look at some men just a little older than me and say, that's NOT gonna be frickin me. I look at others and think, why not me, if he can I can.

Most of my friends are like this. I have two (one that played ball in the minors and is now an operator and one that lifts like me) that aren't but the rest are. They can still move around but they get tired like during baseball practice even in like coach pitch. I'm out there running the bases and they can't even hit fungo without about passing out. They laugh about it and they will diet for a little while and then fall off the wagon. It's just never a commitment for them.
And I feel bad that it's like that for them. My neighbor is one of my really good friends and he started working out with me in February after he had gotten over 250 and he is down to 210 or so without doing anything drastic, just watching what he eats and doing some form of activity daily. He even got one of the other buddies from the neighborhood to start walking in the morning with him. And he talks all the time about how much better he feels.
When I first lost the 60 lbs a few years ago after a 5+ year layoff from working out, it was hard but the changing of the habits was the biggest thing. No more going to lay in bed at 7 eating ice cream or going into the hot tub 3-4 nights a week with 6-8 beers. But I'll be damned if I don't just feel way way better.
All about being there for my kids and being able to stay active and have fun.

I will readily admit to that. I am guilty of sizing people up and competing against them. Also very very guilty of competing with myself to get better, sometimes to my own demise.

I do it too. I see over weight, out of shape dads with their kids all the time. Half of them are sweaty and breathing heavy just walking. In my head I’m thinking, “How can you hope to defend your kids like that? If someone really sinister comes by, what the frick are you going to do about it?” I will not allow myself to become useless when it comes to protecting my family.

It's really the key thing and people don't get it. Health is largely behavior-driven. Your body composition will be decided by what you do 80% of the time. That's hard to hear when you're vastly overweight but it really is a great thing that can lead to freedom - you develop the right habits and you'll meet your goals by following the habits 80-90% of the time.. unless your goal is to be a pro bodybuilder or something like that.
That means in a given year, you can have 10 bad weeks and still make incredible progress. People see it as a barrier but developing the right habits is liberating. It's like getting your cake and eating (one slice!

Nothing wrong with that.... I work directly with about 25 folks that I love dearly..... we do a health screening every year and only one person had better scores than me and he’s in his 20s, I’m 53 .
People ask why I exercise every day and I reply , I may not extend the life God gave me but my quality of life will be as great as I can make it... + it’s fun making boys at work look like girls.
