If you had to pick one lifting mentor, who would it be and why?
Jim Wendler, John Sheaffer, Cody Lefever, Mark Rippetoe..?

I just gave those suggestions as they seem to be the names thrown up quite often regarding programs.
What are the reasons for everyone's picks then?

These would be the two I've easily taken the most from, although Alsruhe would be on top for me.

I've been thinking about running Alsruhe's Powerbuilding 531.
Is it full body 4x/wk with just one of the major compounds, or is it split based?

I've actually never run that. I'm on a modified Texas Method right now.
Lift Vault has a good spreadsheet and it looks like a 4 day split.

Alsruhe mainly inspired me to look at strongman stuff, which I enjoy, and heavily implement giant sets. His general approach towards lifting is also pretty inspiring.
Tate is/was my go to for squat, bench and dead technique.

Rippetoe, but I am a beginner...

Your suggestions aren't bad, I was replying to Sabi naming me. Rip is a dick though and I couldn't lift with him without wanting to fight
Johnny would be good and so would wendler. CL...not sure what his personality is like

I never really had a mentor. I followed various lifting templates and didn’t find the best one for me until my mid-late 30s.
MaxOT lifting one body part per day about 5 days per week. Always giving myself at least 7 days before hitting the same body part.
I don’t have time these days to follow it like I used to, though.

Saw that guy attempt over a grand on bench and have his sleeve bust on the way up. He freaking handled it like it was nothing.

Mark Rippetoe. Starting Strength, and his other works, taught me how to lift and why I should lift.
From there, Jim Wendler, Johnny Pain and to some degree Paul Carter.
