As stated, go to a ortho doc for xrays and, depending on what's happening to your knee, inquire about PT. If not, ortho guys want to cut. I did the above for my condition for both knees and ended up at Ochsner PT on Oneal next to Walmart. David was the person I worked with and it helped.

I agree. I'm stubborn. I have health insurance, but would rather solve things on my own that I believe within my reach.
If this continues for the foreseeable future, I will make an appointment to get my knee checked out.

Voltaren topical gel is the greatest thing ever. I highly recommend it for your 50 year old knees. My 60 year old ones certainly respond well to it.
I never had a lot of success with that. I do take dicolfinic sodium when mine flares up. It's a wonder pill for inflammation. Just can't take it for long stretches.

I've had a lot done to my knees over the years, but a year ago, I really hurt it by stepping in a hole on a hiking trail. Heard the proverbial loud pop.
It was hurting for days, so I finally bit the bullet to go get it checked out by sn orthopedic.
Turned out, nothing was done to it then.
However, many years ago I hurt my knee, did nothing then later on realized that I must have torn my ACL at some point but didn't do anything about it at the time, and subsequently my ACL just wasted away. And now I don't have one.

Not the case for all of them. I was having problems similar to OP and my ortho’s first thought was take some Meloxicam and see what happens. Didn’t resolve to my satisfaction so we did p/t. Then tried a shot, similar to cortisone but he used a different name, to see how it would react before cutting.
I had patella tendinitis, numerous healed injuries to meniscus, early signs of arthritis, and needed to clean up a lot of cartilage that was causing the inflammation. Ended up getting scooped; but other than saying he’d do it if I want to go that route, he never pushed surgery until I was at my breaking point

Sounds like tendinitis. I've dealt with in my knee, wrist, elbow and shoulder. Ice it often and rest it when you can. Can take some time before it feels 100%.

Too many things it can be. Could be torn ligaments, degenerative condition causing cartilage to break down, arthritis coming on, a Baker's cyst holding fluid, etc., etc.
I've had 2 ankle surgeries, 2 rt. knee surgeries, 1 rt. elbow surgery and my rt. rotator cuff surgically repaired. All of them hurt for a fairly long time before I addressed them and all needed surgery to repair.
See a Dr. and he'll at the very least order an x-ray, usually in his office and then probably order an MRI to get the full extent of what's going on.

66 year old here.. knees ache sometimes but about six month ago started aching more frequently.. thinking it had a lot to do with weather change.. driving on interstate and a lot of sitting in pmac..
I tried Voltaren …. not as much as they suggest but a few dabs on each knees a few times a day.. it would always help and in a day or two pain was Gone.. comes back now and then and I just retreat it.. usually only treat for two or three days…
Fwiw you can buy a two tube back at Costco for a lot less than the name brand..

Sounds like tendinitis which can flare up sometimes for no reason. Back off anything you do extra besides just walking when needed.

Based on your symptoms, I think it can be a few things.
Pattelofemoral pain at the top of my list. Following by arthritis, meniscal injury, and lastly pes anserine bursitis.
I’d start with a course of anti inflammatories and like a poster said, use Voltaren. It’s a game changer. Much better than icy hot.
Start with some quad strengthening bd hamstring stretches.

Rest it until it’s better. You can’t out work inflammation.
Then once better start doing sled pulls if you have access to one. I do them as a warm up for every work out and my problem left knee has never felt better. It’s used to bother me and hurt off and on…no more.

Research says otherwise.
One nugget: MDs are providing temporary relief, PTs(good ones) will provide long term relief.
X-Rays by and large are useless, a waste of time, and a waste of your money unless you suspect a fracture. Which is not the case here.

They can also diagnose early arthritis.
First time I have ever seen XRs called useless. Ahh Tigerdroppings.

Tell me why an x-ray is beneficial for injuries that appear to be soft tissue in nature?
Posted on 2/27/25 at 10:57 pm to gotiger
Well you first said they are useless unless you suspect a fracture, which is incorrect, because they can tell you about arthritic change, if you have a high riding patella, or lateral patella; which could make you at risk for patella subluxation, but you know you that clearly.
And no they aren’t beneficial for soft tissue injuries, I agree with you there. But this man said he’s 50, so could it be early arthritis? Maybe could he have some patellofemoral arthritis maybe?
An xray may even show a segund fracture. Which is an avulsion fracture off the the lateral tibial plateau commonly seen in an ACL injury. But yea XRs are useless. I’ll disagree.

You could have an osteophyte growth on your knee. I started having knee pain about 6 years ago and didn’t think much about it until I started noticing a bump growing over the knee where it meets the patellar tendon. It’s similar to a bone spur growing out over the tendon from the knee. It’s mainly just achy, but if I try to play tennis, or something else more strenuous, the pain is pretty severe for a couple of days.

My point was let the initial inflammation calm down before working on PT or corrective exercises…not stay off it entirely. Then work with light loads to strengthen the joint and work your way back up.
My knee was a problem and I also got X-rays and an Ortho consult. Doc said nothing structural just early arthritis and inflammation. They can tell at least superficially if you have any tendon issues by moving the knee around and testing strength in extensions and sideways movement.
Started sled pulls and after a year it made a big difference. Still feel it if I stand from a full squat to the ground to do something but no pain from working out, golf, etc.
