I’ve signed up for CrossFit. What am I getting myself into?

I’m a college-aged male, and my workout experience consists of nothing more than the standard workouts done in high school football and baseball. I’m relatively in shape I guess, I’m 6’0 and 170 pounds so needless to say I need to add about 10-15 pounds. Will CrossFit help me do that? Does it kick your arse at all times or does it eventually become enjoyable?

Over time, sure.

I like it because cardio is always an afterthought in my workouts these days and CF makes is bearable.

The cardio will be the biggest adjustment for me I feel like. Only cardio I’ve done for 3 years now is swimming a few hundred meters a couple times a week

Depends on the box you signed up for but yes it can help so long as they have programming towards your goals aka progressive overload and you eat enough and sleep enough.

Will depend completely on the location and who they cater to. Some are more for soccer moms, and some are for college bros on the sauce.

Overall, CrossFit style training is an amazing method of exercise. It targets everything; strength, cardio, flexibility, calisthenics, etc but some of the over the top stuff could and needs to be done away with.

You won’t bulk up immediately. You’ll probably drop another 3-5 pounds in your first month and then start to pack some muscle weight on as your lifts and power goes up. I still implement a ton of CF style stuff in my programming.

some workouts are harder than others, but if you do it right, it should kick your arse everyday

Go lighter and easier than you think you should at first. Probably your first 3-6 months even. You have to build up to some of the volume and intensity CrossFit will have you working at. Some will literally leave you shaking from CNS fatigue... But that shouldn't happen every day.

That said, every workout should be a good one even if you scale. You don't want to be completely gassed from every single workout but you want to feel worked. Personally I can't go more than 3 consecutive days in a row... My joints will start aching. It takes a long time to get to the point where you can manage it 5 days a week.

No you should not be emptying the gas tank and taxing your CNS every workout

You should be trying to improve your 80% max effort and then going full throttle one and a while

I asked if it gets better when I first started. I was told, no. Now I understand why.

Maybe you've worked up to a point where you can do it, but in no way, shape, or form should a newcomer be sending themselves to edge every workout. They will get hurt.

I read this story on a former Ole Miss baseball player who came in to do a crossfit wod for the first time ever. He bragged and bragged about how strong he was and how good of shape he was in.

The wod that day was part of the crossfit open:
13 min amrap
55 deadlifts (225#)
55 wall balls
55 cal row
55 hand stand push ups.

Ole boy said he could deadlift 600# so when the wod started he did 55 unbroken deadlifts with 225#. When he finished he couldn’t complete one wall ball rep bc he was so winded.

So the moral of the story is, check your ego, sont redline your heart rate from the start, and have fun!

Great way to ensure you make zero progress over time.

Which isn’t good for recovery and is an easy way to plateau going full throttle every time
