I would like to discuss red meat (spin off)

After reading through the steak and eggs diet thread, i would like to have some debates about the long term health effects of Red Meat.
What are everyone's view on eating Red Meat? Some physicians are against it, would like to see people eat red meat 1 to 2 times a month! (I cant do that)
Many articles have come out about the relation to colon cancer and heart disease.
When i diet, i personally select grass fed, all natural filets (pay the premium) and count my macros using red meat as my primary protein etc...
Do you guys think too much red meat is bad for you?

I don't know about how bad it is for you and the long term effects to directly answer your question. But, I eat red meat 1 to 2 times per month at the very most. I may have a steak every 6 weeks or so and maybe a burger every 4 or 5 months or so. I went that route when I was trying to lose a lot of weight and get my blood pressure down and I guess it just carried over.

I eat red meat pretty much daily. Bison and beef are heavily ingrained in my diet. I also eat a lot of chicken. I would like to eat more seafood, but it doesn’t reheat well.
As for the long term effects of eating red meat, we eat meat. We have always eaten meat. Why is it so bad for you? Maybe we should look into what the cattle are fed. Ultimately, we eat what they eat. I buy grassfed as much as I can.
The people who get heart disease, is it only because they eat red meat? Do they exercise regularly? Are they overweight? It’s hard for me to believe that red meat in and of itself is carcinogenic.

In pretty sure it’s been proven that dietary cholesterol doesn’t affect blood cholesterol.

I do not and I have studies that show it's not and that it is very healthy. Key is quality.
I eat it daily. I am planning a post on what I consider to be my manifesto for the average family Guy looking to look good, be healthy, be strong and to be conditioned. I will post diet, workout, and supplementation along with the studies to back everything up.
Hope to have it up with a month or so.

This is a great point.
I often try to incorporate seafood into my diet but when i shop for it i usually get enough to eat just for one meal, salmon filet once a week etc..

If beef was carcinogenic, wouldn’t the cows get cancer? They’re practically made of the stuff.

This. I don’t even eat meat but the key is quality. Free range, grass fed if possible.

Quite the opposite. I'm fairly tired of the subject as I constantly have to bring up what the numbers in the studies actually mean. What the value of their numbers mean, the blatant disregard of those numbers in context, the crazy time involved in FFQ's, or - sometimes, not even accounting for confounding variables.
Some physicians are for red meat, and would like to see patients eat it 2-3 times a day.
Now, do I care what other do? Not really anymore. Trying to use the govt to remove my food source? I have a huge fricking problem with.

23 and Me told me it would make me gain weight.

What's really frustrating is that they've stopped using beef tallow to cook things in. I went to a restaurant recently where the fries, veggies and even desserts were cooked in tallow. fricking great.
I think it's good to opt for grass fed, high quality beef. But I think that effect pales in comparison to eating some shitty carb. IOW, "bad" meat is better for you than "good" carbs.
I switched from grilling my steaks to doing everything in the oven and cast iron. However, I'm probably going to get one of those infrared steak grills that get 1000 degrees plus. The good steak houses cook quickly at extremely high heat - it essentially explodes the internal fat immediately (to delicious effect!)
You should branch out to some other cuts away from filet. And also, learn how to make yourself a good brisket.

I eat red meat probably 4-5 days per week.
I don't think red meat in and of itself is carcinogenic. It does seem like a diet high in red meat and low on fiber can slightly increase risk of colorectal cancer, but if it does it's a very small amount that's offset by eating vegetables.
As for health, yes quality matters since real grassfed ground beef has a better ratio of PUFAs. Otherwise grassfed and grainfed aren't wildly different. In terms of health.
However, I caution against swinging the pendulum too far and calling it a health food or 'superfood'. As with anything just be smart and moderate use. Mix it up.
Fat (and carb) intake certainly does.
