I have really not been working out or exercising much this year for a variety of reasons, and I could probably eat better (understatement).

I finally went to my Primary for the first time in years and did a blood panel.

My cholesterol is a little on the high side but my Triglycerides are...kind of on the extremely high side.

I'm meeting with my doctor in 2 weeks or so to go over the results and game plan.

But I'd like to get this board's opinion on how best to handle it, little changes in diet that I can make, etc. to help lower my cholesterol and triglyceride counts.

Stop eating shite food. It's not that complicated, but that doesnt mean it's easy. A baked potato once a week isn't going to kill you. A baked potato one night, then pizza the next, then a burger and fries the next will

I’m going to guess you consume a lot of carbohydrates, likely sweet tea, soft drinks, and/or fruit juices. Cut you intake of carbs, exercise, and add Omega 3s to your diet will help lower your triglycerides.

I started walking 5 miles a day, drinking 10 glasses of water a day and mine lowered significantly.

Take this statement, do the exact opposite, and you should be on a better track.

Forget about your cholesterol for now or at least in the form of any absolute numbers.

Get your triglycerides:HDL ratio down to 2:1 or better (obviously better here means lower trig side), and the low carb, exercise, omega-3, no processed oils (mainly, cut out soy/veggie and canola oil and you're on your way) advice above, and sleep.

How old are you?

Lose weight (presumed needed, and will happen if you're doing the stuff in this thread).

Eta: cut alcohol.

Definitely try the diet and exercise suggestions. If those don't work, some people just have genetically high numbers. Medication may be prudent.

First, I’d insist on an LDL-P test to really understand, and I wouldn’t take any meds in the interim.

You can start addressing the triglycerides now with the suggestions in this thread.

This is me. I have to take Vascepa and Niacin, and even then they're not great numbers.

Exercise, diet, 1 bowl of oatmeal every morning, and small glass of red wine daily

Very similar situation for me, triglycerides were 600 to 700. I was about 200 to 210 pounds at 6’ 1”. Ate terrible and didn’t exercise.

Doc put me on Vascepa, Niacin, and fenofibrate but I didn’t take them regularly. At 40 my numbers were still in the 300 to 400 range. I decided to get off of soft drinks all together, eat better and start running.

I now run about 1,200 miles a year and take my meds as directed. Triglycerides are now below 100. Although I have started eating bad again and drink beer everyday I am able to maintain my numbers in the desired ranges. Takes a lot of exercise to do it but I have been able to so far.
