So I'm going to join the gym tomorrow for the first time in probably 15 years.

I read that usually people take like 5g (or maybe mg can't remember) of creatine a day but the first week they start at like 25 a day. Is that legit?

Also, my workouts will have to be in the evenings around 8 or 9 is doing a few sets of 50 push ups earlier in the day or on off days going to help or hurt?

No need to load the creatine just take 5g daily.

Depending on your work capacity it could definitely hurt your lifts. Start slow and ease into it.

Agreed. The end goal is just a constant presence of creatine in the muscle, and the small increase in how fast you get to saturation isn't worth the cost.

The pushups...if you're just starting out, I wouldn't worry a ton. You won't push a ton of weight in the gym to begin with, so recovery should be fine.

If you get 2-3 weeks in and your chest, shoulders and triceps are always sore and don't let up, start pulling back on the pushups. Unless you get that constant soreness you can't recover from, you should be good.

The loading phase was the typical recommended method when creatine first hit the scene back in the mid 90's.

It will take slightly longer to saturate your muscles but 5-10 grams per day (taken periworkout) is the current recommended protocol by most and will give you the best bang for your buck

is it still recommended to cycle off of it every 10 weeks or so?

No taken in perpetuity

I'd go further and say direct opposite. Cycling off it is very counterproductive.

I cycled off about 2 weeks ago and I'm not doing that again.

I cycle off just because creatine may cause hair loss. It's not definitive, but just in case i take it in spurts of 8-12 weeks.

Yep, just regular creatine monohydrate will do.

Never heard of this, can you provide some links?

Just google creatine and hair loss and you’ll see a ton of articles. Nothing definitive again, but enough of a question mark for me that I don’t take it in perpetuity.

Just get regular Creatine Monohydrate. Micronized is fine. Don't fall for the glitzy promotional shite "Yuuuuuuugggeee Gainz!!!" "Now with citrus for better absorption!!"

And whatever you do, don't listen to the brosky working at GNC. They want to upsell you, not offer you the best product for the best price.

You don't need any of that shite. Don't preload. Just 5g a day. Everyday. For the rest of your life.

If you're like me, mixing it with plain water will make dosing creatine a chore. Either mix it with a shake, or pour the creatine directly into your mouth and chase it with a lot of water. frick trying to choke down 8oz+ of water mixed with creatine, then trying to get the large amount that doesn't dissolve scraped out the bottom of the cup.

As far as pushups, do as many as your want. They won't hurt your work in the gym. Chances are that extra work will help more than it could ever hurt.

I'm not sure the evidence is clear. This article has a pretty good summary of the potential link between creatine and DHT based hair loss.

Examine

My own experiences, I'm almost 39 with some slight baldness in a family where just about all men are bald by 30. I've maintained all my arse hair. I've taken creatine constantly for 15 years or so.

I tried 2 rounds of HCL, but didn't care for it. It's much more expensive and has a bitter salty taste. I just do regular creatine monohydrate and I have no issues with it.

Stuff like HCL is overpriced hype. Plenty of studies have shown that no variation of creatine outperforms simple monohydrate.

You can buy Creatine Mono on MyProtein.com right now for about $10 for a pound. I just bought some last week. Should last at least 90 days.

5g creatine mono in any beverage, any time of day, every day, for the rest of your life.

Don't miss more than 2 days in a row. Missing one day is fine.

HCL if you have a sensitive stomach.

I personally don't take it with caffeine but the studies are suspect on that (possible it messes with absorption). Just take it outside your coffee/tea session and you should be fine regardless. Water + Mono + Mio lemonade for me.

Cheers!
