So when the question is asked

"what can you bench/squat/etc" what do you answer with? Is it a weight that you can put out a solid set of or a 1 rep max? i never gave it much thought and actually have no idea what most people consider the "right" answer.

I usually just say that I don't know what my max is, but I can do XXX for 8 reps or whatever.

this has been my kinda train of thought. i dont know any of my 1 rep max. i dont lift like that and work out alone so not looking to hurt myself.

I don't answer it because it is a question usually asked by jabronies. But seriously, I haven't gone for a 1 rep max since high school when they made us.

well i just get asked a bit more recently from people i know who know ive been training alot harder for the last year. they dont lift themselves and honestly any answer probably would suit them just fine. it just got me to thinking how most do answer said question.

I usually just make up a number higher than what I assume their max is

Everybody knows about what their max is.

Don’t care if you haven’t gone for a 1RM since high school. You still know “okay, I can hit 225 x 10 which means my 1RM is probably in the vicinity of 300”.

Just say “I dunno haven’t maxed in a while but probably around 300”. Or whatever your number is. They’re not gonna rack up weights and tell you to prove it.

Is there really an issue going to 1 rep max? I'm overly cautious. I'm not attempting higher weight if the last rep felt sketchy. I fail all the time due to max reps. I guess I probably don't have my true, leave it all on the table numbers, but I'll go as far as I know I can with good form.

My fear is tendon injury. Could be an irrational fear though.

My background over several years prior to covid was triathlon and running. A lot of training is based off of your "max". You were often testing yourself every 4 to 6 weeks with an all out effort at a specific distance in swimming, cycling, and running. You then based training off of percentages of whatever that time/effort was. So I probably am used to chasing targets and testing myself on them.

I then moved to Crossfit last year and did very similar things. A lot was based off of a percentage of your max. We didn't do max efforts often, but over the 9 months I was there, I probably maxed everything twice and tweaked as I saw improvement. I've only maxed my squat once since I've started working out at home. I was just feeling it that day and have had a goal to hit 315 for a while and was sure I could so went for it. I guess that really isn't a max because I just stopped since I was out of plates . I also personally have a goal of 1000 lb total by the end of the year, so I'll probably be checking my progress a couple times this year. I do however mostly just follow a LP right now since I'm really just a beginner in taking any of this seriously.

i mean % based work is great, but just estimate 1 rep max and use a 80-90% training max of the estimate.

It's your 1 rep max, obviously. If you've never done it, though, then just clarify what you consider your PR to be.
