First event was a 5K run into an 800M swim and one male Elite athlete drowned. There is a reason why Triathlons start with a swim, and not end with it.

Lazar Dukic was seen to be in distress during the live stream and the safety crews did not see it and he went under. A spectator saw it but was turned away in the water because their own crews did not know what was occurring.

Lazar either started to cramp very badly and could not stay afloat or he had a cardiovascular event. Regardless of what occurred with him, this should have been prevented by more safety crews in the water and/or a more alert safety crew.

Lazar's brother Luka is also competing there as an elite athlete.

Prayer's to him and his family.

He's struggled on the swim every year...the fact that they didn't have a paddle boarder on his arse the whole time is short-sighted.

The fact that they put a swim after a 5k run where you know those dudes are pushing 18 minutes minimum...is negligence.

Crossfit as a company is fixing to pay probably regardless of how many waivers were signed. I wouldn't be surprised to see many gyms disassociate themselves after this.

My loose, far-out opinion is I don't see how Crossfit as an org survives this.

I compete in one big event every year with an open water swim, but it's never longer than 400M. Last year's was less than 200M. It's usually a triangle between the stage and two buoys or out/in to a single buoy. We are never more than 75M away from the shore.

There are more safety crews in that event where we are swimming within eyesight of up to 1,000 fans than what they had out there today.

That’s really sad. Just saw the alert from ESPN and came here to see if there was a thread.

CrossFit seems to have been losing gyms in recent years, so i definitely see this as a PR nightmare for a brand that is definitely not on the upswing of popularity.

Really awful for the guy and his family.

About 6 people: 3 men & 3 women dropped out after Thursday including both who won in 2023: Jeff Adler and Laura Horvath. Luka, for obvious reasons, also withdrew.

Luka said this: You love the sport so much but it doesn’t love you back.

I think it’s more like: You love the sport so much, but it fails you when you most need it.

Thursday was a complete failure across the board: from putting an 800M swim after a very fast paced 5K to a lack of safety personnel in the water to assist swimmers in distress.

I’ll probably watch some tater today and tomorrow, but after what happened on Thursday really turned off my interest this year.

Wow, I didn’t realize those folks withdrew. Those are big names. Good on them for having convictions and listening to their moral compass, unlike CrossFit.

What's the logic behind putting the swim 2nd?? I've never seen that in any triathlon (and hopefully never will again).

An awful, awful tragedy

Not to mention that the water was 87°, from what I gather borderline for not being safe.

Watched some today.

The team that won is a group of solid people: James Newbury, Khan Porter, Kara Saunders are all great. I have spoken to both Porter & Newbury at events before and they are awesome. Saunders was on her way to a Indy victory several years ago (Tia’s first title) but she picked up an injury the final day. She announced this would be her last CFGs earlier this morning.

Which one was he in that clip? I didn't see anyone disappear.

He’s not in that one, but other videos have him circled not very far from the finish line where he starts to struggle before he goes under.

wasn’t he a former water polo athlete? Seems strange the swim was a struggle if so

I don't see CrossFit the brand being around much longer. The methodology will continue on, maybe through whatever Glassman is cooking up.

I agree, even as a waaaaayyyy outside observer/non-participant like me, the Crossfit HQ organization is so fricking unpopular now (as it has been for quite a while, but it seems like it gets more unpopular every year, and I'm referring to their reputation prior to Lazar's death), I would not be surprised to see a planned mass exodus of notable CF athletes/gyms who go off in their own direction and organize their own games systems, gym network, etc.

And then we all get to see how dirty the Crossfit org wants to play. Will they take everyone to court? Can the biggest of the big names leave? Like Tia? I really have no idea, maybe there is all kinds of exclusivity agreements in place or non-compete clauses, wouldn't surprise me. Even if CF is dumb enough to fight this backlash, they will be perceived as defending themselves, and therefore defending their position to operate unsafe events that have injured, and now killed someone. I've never watched a video so many times that makes me feel ill, usually if something is that unpleasant to me I cut out early and never go back, but I still can't believe that this happened...under those circumstances, in that manner. It's unconscionable.

I’m an outsider to CrossFit but always watch the games and follow a lot of the athletes.

Really surprised they didn’t outright stop the competition considering the blowback CrossFit was getting. I think a lot of the athletes who kept competing will ultimately regret that decision. I’ve seen a lot of people posting “I am going forward with competing to honor Lazar because it’s what he would want.” That doesn’t look great to me.
