I’ve jumped on the sardine bandwagon because I was looking for a new source of protein. What I’ve started doing is mixing a can of sardines with my albacore tuna and it boosts protein by 50% while also giving the dry tuna a bit more flavor.
Like several posters have said, don’t get the cheap ones - unless you are a hobo.

is this why the are all sold out everywhere? I used to get a can or two of King Oscar and know they’ve been sold out for like a month

I like the ones in Louisiana hot sauce.

Chicken of the Sea used to sell them in Sriracha, but they stopped a few years ago. They were great.
Been eating them since my Navy days, perfect quick meal. I like the La hot sauce ones but like their mediterranean verstion better that's they way I first ate them.. .in of all places sardinia

keep a few cans in my GET HOME bag.

Yes. I went to Kroger yesterday and I found 2 cans of King Oscar mackerel. No sardines.

Where do you live that there’s a run on sardines. Yeah, it’s become somewhat trendy because of the health advantages but I can still walk into any grocery store and find them.

I can’t find any in olive oil, or it’s very limited (central Texas)

Eat out of glass jars to avoid consuming the heavy metals that leach from the cans.

Also, get the ones packed in olive oil rather than vegetable oil.

So the Macherel is as good as the sardines from and taste and nutrition standpoint?

Yes. When researching this I came across a list called SMASH fish.
Salmon
Mackerel
Anchovies
Sardines
Herring

These are the healthy fat fish.

When eating the mackerel, I didn't notice a difference. I've also had cans of salmon in olive oil and they taste great, too.

I’ve always kept them as an occasional meal replacement.

Same. I keep a stash in my pantry for days when I get home and I'm feeling lazy and don't want to make anything for dinner.

For those running into supply issues, check out European-centric grocery stores in your area, assuming you're in a large metro area. You'll be blown away by the various types of canned and jarred fish.

I've been a fan of sardines since I was a kid eating them with my dad. I still eat them from time to time, but might check out a sardine fast.

I do carnivore/keto and so does my doctor. Last time I went to see him, he was doing a 5 day sardine fast. He gave me some solid recommendations and even gave me a can of King Oscars! That was a first. A can of sardines from a doc. Go high end on these. European, whole, packed in olive oil. Nuri from World Market is good. I ordered Skin and Bone online, and they’re awesome. Eating the whole fish gives you more nutrients.

I've never had a sardine in my life, mostly just becuase it's not something you really ever think about eating but also becuase of the longstadnign reputation they have as being completely awful.

This thread has me intrigued though. I will eat starkist tuna directly from the can so I'm totally fine with that kind of taste. I see people ITT saying they will do the same with sardines, but this picture of the "Season" brand filets almost looks cooked like somethign you'd put in teh pan for a minute. Do people do that or is definitely a "straight from the can" kinda thing?

how does the taste compare to straight tuna? Also are the health benefits/nutrition info that much better than canned tuna?

Love sardines on a saltine.
Great food. Pink Salmon in a can is great too. IMO, it is just as good as Tuna.
Only issue with sardines, is the smell- my office gets mad when I “stink up” the kitchen, lol. Tip- brush your teeth or use mouth wash after consuming!!

Super interesting. Cancer cells only consume glucose so if you cut all glucose containing foods out of your diet it starves the cancer. Amazing something so simple could be effective.
If only in the past 50+ years of research they had thought of that!

Unfortunately, it isn't that simple. The body can produce glucose from other food sources. Also, cancer cells can switch to feeding on alternative fuels, like amino acids, fats, and other nutrients, in order to grow.

frick cancer.

I suggest starting with brisling. Smaller, tenderer, milder, expensiver too.

I eat them regularly now. We ate them often at school lunch when I was in Japan. Depending on the day, you might eat them like you see out of the can, other days you get the whole fish and eat it whole. If your was full of eggs it was condidered a special treat by the kids, but it was a bit too much for me
